Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey Meets Sports Minister to Discuss Governance Matters

The CSR Journal Magazine

Hockey India (HI) President Dilip Tirkey recently held a meeting with Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur to discuss the current status and future course of the sport’s administration in the country. The discussions, which were held in New Delhi, focused on matters concerning governance, grassroots development, and the overall progress of hockey in India under the federation’s stewardship.

The interaction assumes significance in light of HI’s ongoing efforts to re-establish strong administrative and organisational structures following previous leadership transitions. With India continuing to raise its profile in international hockey, the meeting was aimed at ensuring continuity in planning and efficient execution of programmes under the national federation.

Focus on Strengthening Organisational Processes

During the meeting, the HI President apprised the Sports Minister of the internal developments and strategic actions taken by the federation to enhance transparency and streamline operations. Emphasis was laid on improving the functioning of the central and state-level bodies associated with Indian hockey. Tirkey shared updates on the implementation of governance reforms and steps taken toward better coordination with member units across the country.

Ensuring accountability and adherence to sports governance norms remains a key focus area for the sporting authorities. With various sports bodies in India being reviewed for compliance with the National Sports Development Code, the dialogue also served to align the federation’s actions with government expectations and regulatory standards.

Emphasis on Grassroots and Infrastructure Development

The discussion also highlighted the importance of promoting hockey at the grassroots level. Initiatives for talent identification, coaching support, and regular competitions at the district and state levels were reviewed. Tirkey underscored the need for enhanced infrastructure to facilitate the training and development of young players, especially in rural and underserved regions where hockey continues to enjoy popularity.

The Sports Ministry has maintained a focus on bridging regional disparities in sports development, and the HI leadership conveyed the federation’s initiatives undertaken in collaboration with state units to address the same. Plans to expand access to equipment, coaching personnel, and tournament exposure were also discussed to nurture the next generation of hockey talent in India.

International Preparations and Athlete Support

India’s preparations for upcoming international tournaments, including major events on the FIH calendar, were also part of the conversation between Tirkey and the Sports Minister. The two discussed the current training schedules, athlete welfare, and logistical arrangements required to support the national teams’ performance on the global stage.

Special attention was given to ensuring that athletes have access to consistent financial and professional support through schemes under the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and other national programmes. The role of scientific training, nutrition, and psychological support in modern athlete development was acknowledged as critical for maintaining international competitiveness.

Continued Engagement Between Federation and Ministry

The meeting underlined the collaborative approach being taken by the Sports Ministry and Hockey India in advancing the sport within the country. With several key initiatives underway and increased expectations from the national teams, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening institutional support and maintaining a transparent governance structure in Indian hockey.

The interaction between Dilip Tirkey and Anurag Thakur is expected to be followed by regular engagements to monitor progress and address emerging challenges in the administration and promotion of hockey in India.
