The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) under Arvind Kejriwal faces a big political loss in its 10-year Delhi reign while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) shows promising results in the upcoming 2025 Delhi Assembly voting. The Bharatiya Janata Party has made a historic comeback by securing 48 out of 70 assembly seats, ending a 27-year gap from dominating in Delhi. AAP’s previously dominant position has disappeared since the party now only controls 22 seats out of the total 70 indicating a major political decline.

AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal faces defeat

The important New Delhi constituency became the site of a tight contest when BJP candidate Parvesh Verma contested AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal for the seat. Kejriwal’s defeat from the very important seat resulted in a crushing political loss for his party. The electoral results showed major disadvantages for AAP leaders as former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia lost Jangpura to Tarvinder Singh Marwah of BJP. Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj of AAP trailed behind his BJP opponent in Greater Kailash after leading in the beginning of the race.
The Congress Party has continued its struggle to maintain political significance as it failed to gain even a single seat in the latest assembly election.
Exit polls projected victory for the BJP but the AAP’s unexpected electoral collapse took polling experts by surprise. The poll predictions showed the BJP leading with 39 seats while expecting AAP to lose up to 30 seats despite its historically strong performance during the previous election. The growing voter dissatisfaction against AAP emerges despite its dedicated service strategies for welfare benefits and administration. During the election campaign, the BJP criticised AAP by mainly pointing out its corruption allegations.

Voter turnout lower than previous election

The voter turnout on February 5 reached 60.54% while showing a minimal drop from the earlier voting participation. The BJP-led government of Haryana faced an accusation from AAP about polluting Yamuna River causing enraged confrontations between both parties and increasing political conflict.
The leadership of Kejriwal faced intense scrutiny throughout the campaign because he along with Sisodia spent jail time due to the Delhi liquor policy case. The controversy surrounding AAP corruption matters allowed the BJP to bolster its corruption accusations against the party which resulted in AAP’s negative election results.
