Himachal Pradesh CM Sukhu Launches Robotic Surgery Program at IGMC Shimla

The CSR Journal Magazine

On March 11, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, inaugurated robotic surgery services at the Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMC) in Shimla. During the launch, he highlighted the significance of advanced technology in making high-quality medical treatment more accessible to the general public. Sukhu pointed out that the robotic surgery initiative has already yielded positive outcomes in the state, with around 150 successful surgeries performed over the past seven to eight months at the Super Specialty Hospital in Chamyana.

Expansion Plans for Robotic Surgery Facilities

The Chief Minister announced plans to extend robotic surgery services to other major medical institutions across the state, including in Mandi and Hamirpur. This move aims to enhance access to modern treatment options. Sukhu noted that previously, robotic surgery was primarily offered at a high cost in private hospitals. The introduction of such technology in government healthcare facilities will allow a broader segment of the population to benefit from these advanced procedures. He mentioned that Himachal Pradesh is on track to become one of the pioneering states in North India to offer robotic surgery in multiple public hospitals.

Affordability and Recovery Benefits Highlighted

In his address, Sukhu emphasized the affordability aspect of the robotic surgery program. He revealed that charges for this service in government hospitals will be significantly lower compared to private settings. Patients opting for standard ward facilities at IGMC will be charged ₹30,000, while those choosing special wards will incur a fee of ₹50,000. This contrasts sharply with the previous costs in private hospitals, which could reach around ₹3 lakh.

Investment in Healthcare Infrastructure

The Chief Minister also spoke about ongoing investments to bolster the state’s healthcare infrastructure. This includes the installation of advanced diagnostic equipment, such as new MRI machines and modern laboratories at major hospitals, including IGMC, Tanda, and Chamyana. He asserted that these initiatives will not only enhance healthcare delivery but also significantly improve patient experiences throughout the state.

LPG Distribution Concerns Addressed

During the inauguration, Sukhu also addressed concerns regarding the distribution of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), stating that it is managed at the central government level. He expressed optimism that the issues raised by the Union government concerning LPG distribution would be resolved efficiently and in a timely manner. The Chief Minister reiterated the mutual responsibilities of state and central governments in ensuring smooth utility services for residents.

Political Criticism of the BJP

In a political context, Sukhu criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing them of neglecting the interests of Himachal Pradesh. He questioned the party’s commitment to addressing the needs of disaster-affected families and raised concerns about a reduction of ₹8,000-10,000 crore in the state’s Revenue Deficit Grant. According to Sukhu, BJP leaders have been largely silent on these pressing issues. He further claimed that divisions within the state BJP are evident, suggesting that the party’s focus has shifted to social media criticisms rather than substantive policy discussions relevant to the state’s well-being.
