Helipad Mishap During President Murmu’s Sabarimala Visit

The CSR Journal Magazine

On Wednesday morning, as soon as President of India Droupadi Murmu’s helicopter touched Pramadam helipad, a newly constructed surface caved in. The President was heading towards Sabarimala temple. Immediately after the President was escorted to Sabarimala, police officers, fire and rescue officers attempted to free the Indian Air Force’s Mi-17 helicopter that got stuck in the tarmac. This visit of President Murmu is historic as she is the first woman head of the state to visit Lord Ayyappa temple and she is the second President to visit, first was V. V. Giri, who visited in the 1970s. The President will be returning to Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday evening after the pilgrimage. Tomorrow she will be unveiling the bust of former President K. R. Narayanan at Raj Bhavan, inaugurates the Mahasamadhi Centenary celebrations of Sree Narayana Guru at Sivagiri Mutt in Varkala, and attends the closing ceremony of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations at St. Thomas College, Pala. On the last day of her three-day visit, she will be attending centenary celebrations of St. Teresa’s College, Ernakulam.

About her visit

Around 11.50, President Murmu reached the temple and offered prayers. She was seen carrying Irumudi from Pampa and climbing the Pathinettam Padi. Kerala Minister for Devaswoms V. N. Vasavan was seen along with the President. Post this visit, she will be staying at the temple for 2 hours in a room arranged at the temple complex. She will leave the temple around 3.00 and head to Thiruvananthapuram.

Does the President own a building here?

There is a building inside the Sabarimala Sannidhanam which is officially registered in the name of the President of India, as per the official data. This ownership’s registration dates back to 1978. Forty percent of the land was leased to BSNL for 99 years. The registration is done in the name of the President, who is the constitutional head of India.

When BSNL started operation, it had just 30 connections, but now this has become one of the top-performing models in terms of optical fiber connectivity.
