“He Wasn’t Sleeping, So…”: Mother Puts 15‑Day‑Old Baby in Fridge in Uttar Pradesh

The CSR Journal Magazine

A very disturbing incident has come to light from Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh. A 23-year-old woman placed her 15-day-old newborn inside a refrigerator and went to sleep. The baby was rescued after his cries were heard by his grandmother, who discovered him inside the fridge. Thankfully, the infant was rushed to a doctor in time and was found to be safe.

Family First Suspected Supernatural Possession

When questioned about her actions, the woman told her family that the baby wasn’t sleeping, so she kept him in the fridge. Shocked by her response, the family initially suspected that she was under the influence of supernatural forces. On September 6, they took her to a local occult practitioner for rituals and exorcism, but no improvement was observed.

Diagnosis: Postpartum Psychosis

Eventually, a relative advised the family to consult a psychiatrist. Upon medical evaluation, the woman was diagnosed with postpartum psychosis. A rare but serious mental health condition that affects some women after childbirth. Doctors explained that the disorder can cause hallucinations, paranoia, and delusional thinking. This often makes the mother a threat to herself or her child.

The woman had recently given birth to a son and lived with her husband and in-laws in the Jabbar Colony area of Moradabad’s Katghar police station limits. Her husband works as a brass artisan. The family was unaware of her deteriorating mental health condition following childbirth.

Doctors Urge Mental Health Awareness Post-Delivery

According to mental health professionals, postpartum psychosis affects approximately 5% of new mothers and requires urgent psychiatric intervention. Delayed treatment can lead to dangerous situations, as seen in this case. Doctors emphasized the need for families to be vigilant about mental health symptoms in postpartum women, including paranoia, confusion, and extreme behavioral changes.
