HCG Cancer Hospital in Mumbai has successfully treated more than 125 patients diagnosed with prostate cancer using non-invasive methods. The treatments employed include Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT), which utilises the advanced Versa HD radiation platform, and CyberKnife, a robotic system that allows for precise radiation delivery. These options serve as effective alternatives to traditional surgical approaches, tailored to patients’ specific needs based on their age, cancer stage, and overall health.

Data from the Global Cancer Observatory (GLOBOCAN 2022), affiliated with the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC–WHO), indicates that India recorded approximately 37,948 new cases of prostate cancer in 2022. This figure is expected to rise to around 82,252 annually by 2045, underscoring the need for heightened awareness of available treatment options and methodologies.

SBRT is designed to deliver concentrated doses of radiation directly to tumours, significantly reducing exposure to adjacent healthy tissues. For those patients deemed suitable for this type of treatment, the process can typically be completed in five outpatient sessions, allowing them to return home without the need for hospitalisation. This method contrasts sharply with the conventional surgical approach, which entails incisions and extended recovery times.

Technological Advancements in Cancer Care

The introduction of the CyberKnife platform at HCG Cancer Hospital marks a significant development in precision radiation oncology, being the first of its kind in Mumbai. This technology incorporates robotic precision along with advanced imaging capabilities, permitting doctors to administer highly focused radiation treatments while ensuring the protection of surrounding organs. Such precision is crucial for effective treatment planning and delivery, especially in the context of internal organ movement.

Dr Trinanjan Basu, who serves as the Head of Department and Senior Consultant in Radiation Oncology at HCG Cancer Hospitals, emphasised that patients often believe surgery is the only available treatment option. He highlighted that advanced radiation therapies, like SBRT, allow for effective management of prostate cancer without the need for invasive procedures. Each patient’s treatment plan is devised after careful consideration of individual factors, including age, cancer stage, and personal health preferences.

According to Dr Basu, the hospital has treated patients across various risk categories, including intermediate-risk and high-risk prostate cancer. Most individuals receiving treatment range from 60 to 75 years of age, with about 20 patients aged between 75 and 85. The treatment approach provides options for those who might not be ideal candidates for surgical procedures.
