Hayden Panettiere Passes Away at 36 Amid Battles with Mental Health

The CSR Journal Magazine

Hayden Panettiere, an acclaimed actor known for her performances in both film and television, has died at the age of 36. Her contributions to Hollywood included memorable roles that won her widespread admiration. Panettiere was candid about her personal struggles, including her family dynamics and her relationships, notably with former partner Wladimir Klitschko. She openly discussed her experiences with postpartum depression and addiction throughout her career.

Born in Palisades, New York, Panettiere hailed from a family immersed in the arts and public service. Her mother, Lesley Vogel, was a soap opera actress, while her father, Skip Panettiere, worked as a lieutenant in the fire department. The family faced a tragic loss when her younger brother, Jansen, died unexpectedly from a heart condition in 2023, at the age of 28.

At the time of her death, Panettiere’s net worth was estimated to be $6 million. Throughout her career, she made notable real estate investments, including a mid-century modern house in the Hollywood Hills, which she purchased in March 2008 for $2.635 million and subsequently sold in March 2014 for $3.075 million. Additionally, she acquired a newly built property in Nashville in 2012, later selling it in October 2018 for $1.65 million.

Personal Life and Motherhood

Panettiere is survived by her daughter, Kaya Evdokia Klitschko, who was born in Hawaii in December 2014. Kaya is the child of Panettiere and former heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko. The couple announced their engagement in October 2013 but ended their romantic relationship in August 2018, as noted by Panettiere’s mother. Despite their separation, they maintained an amicable co-parenting arrangement.

Throughout their co-parenting journey, Panettiere frequently returned to Ukraine to spend time with her daughter. Their commitment to a friendly relationship was evident in various public statements, showcasing an effort to ensure Kaya’s well-being amidst their personal changes.

In various interviews, Panettiere reiterated her dedication to motherhood, emphasising the importance of her daughter in her life. She described the challenges of balancing her career with her responsibilities as a parent, reflecting on how motherhood shaped her identity.

Mental Health Challenges and Public Disclosures

In her memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning”, published on May 19, 2026, Hayden Panettiere shared her struggle with severe postpartum depression (PPD). She described her initial feelings of emotional emptiness following an intense labour and emergency surgery, revealing that she “felt nothing” when first holding her newborn. Panettiere wrote about the overwhelming challenge of bonding with Kaya, stating that it felt “like an insurmountable task” from the start.

Panettiere’s narrative drew attention to the often overlooked impact of PPD, characterised not by fear but a profound emotional void. She detailed how this numbness led to severe dependency on alcohol, stating that her need to drink became a priority, overshadowing her thoughts of motherhood and career. She admitted to requiring a drink to function as early as 6 am.

In seeking professional help, she was formally diagnosed with PPD and revealed the difficult decision she made in 2018 to relinquish full custody of Kaya to Klitschko. This choice, described by Panettiere as a “living nightmare,” underscored her battles with addiction and mental health, deeply impacting her life and choices.
