Gurgaon Ranked 41st cleanest City in Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 Survey After Ranking 140 Last Year

The CSR Journal Magazine

Gurgaon has been ranked the seventh cleanest city in Haryana and the 41st cleanest nationally in the recently released Swachh Survekshan results for 2024–25, published on Thursday. The annual cleanliness survey under the Swachh Bharat Mission is a step toward making the cities of India better in terms of waste processing. Many cities have shifted in the rankings, including Gurgaon, located on the outskirts of the national capital. Gurgaon was able to push its ranking up from last year’s 140th spot, despite the city performing fairly poorly in the area of waste segregation at source.

The Swachh Survekshan is conducted by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to assess local bodies on metrics including door-to-door (D2D) waste collection, source segregation (separating waste into dry, wet, and hazardous categories at source), and waste processing through treatment and recycling.

Gurgaon achieved a 98% waste processing rate and a 59% D2D collection rate. However, it recorded a mere 10% in source segregation.

The Honourable President of India, Smt. Dr. Droupadi Murmu, confirmed the Swachh Survekshan 2024–25 awards at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. Among 223 Super Swachh League cities, Ahmedabad, Bhopal, and Lucknow emerged as top Swachh Shahars. The cities that topped the national chart include Indore, Surat, Navi Mumbai, and Vijayawada.

This year’s survey not only refined and streamlined the framework for larger cities but also simplified it for smaller ones, encouraging wider participation. Following the ‘One City One Award’ principle, the top-performing cities from each state were recognised as Promising Swachh Shahars. A total of 34 cities from various states and union territories earned awards, showcasing notable progress in urban cleanliness and sanitation.

Simultaneously, Union Minister Shri Manohar Lal also launched the Swachh City Partnership Initiative to emphasise the significance of peer learning. Under this, all 78 top-performing cities across the country will adopt and mentor one poor-performing city from their respective states. Alongside this, the Accelerated Site Remediation Programme was also announced by the Union Minister, who said: “The winning cities will guide, handhold, and lead the way for others. It is time to bring the low-performing cities to the top… This one-year special program starting from August 15, 2025, will not only help fast-track legacy waste remediation and unlock massive urban space but will also push for scientific waste processing capacity.”
