Government of Maharashtra and Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Enhance Maha r-PET Abhiyaan in Thane

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Government of Maharashtra, Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), and Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages (HCCB) have expanded the Maha r-PET Abhiyaan programme in Thane with the opening of a dedicated PET Collection Centre. This facility aims to improve the collection and recycling process for used PET bottles within the city. The initiative includes a comprehensive collection infrastructure designed to enhance the recovery of PET bottles and channel them into approved recycling pathways.

The newly established centre serves as a central hub for aggregating used PET bottles, facilitating efficient collection operations. It aggregates bottles recovered through a network of partners and retailers, streamlining the process to ensure adequate recycling practices. This initiative is expected to contribute significantly to the local recycling ecosystem.

To further support this effort, the programme has introduced dedicated collection bins aimed at motivating the community to segregate used PET bottles at the source. This initiative is complemented by the introduction of the Maha r-PET Abhiyaan Participation Certificate, which acknowledges retailers actively involved in the collection process.

Key Initiatives Launched

The programme also saw the launch of electric vehicles to enhance last-mile collection efficiency across Thane, underscoring a commitment towards sustainable transport solutions for this initiative. Additionally, benches made from recycled PET plastic were unveiled during the event, highlighting practical applications of materials recovered through the recycling process.

Minister Pankaja Munde, who oversees Animal Husbandry, Environment, and Climate Change in Maharashtra, attended the inauguration, emphasising the importance of community engagement. According to her, the programme represents a shift towards a more sustainable way of handling used PET bottles, promoting the idea of ‘use and collect’ instead of ‘use and throw’.

This focus on community involvement is pivotal to ensuring the success of the initiative, which not only aims to enhance product recovery but also educates citizens on responsible disposal practices.

Long-Term Goals of Maha r-PET Abhiyaan

The Maha r-PET Abhiyaan is a first-of-its-kind movement initiated by the Maharashtra government to enhance the collection, recovery, and recycling processes of used PET bottles state-wide. The programme seeks to alleviate the burden on landfills while advancing circular economy objectives. It is designed to promote the collection and recycling of PET bottles through various channels, including community participation and supportive collection infrastructure.

In his remarks, Avinash Kant Kumar, Head of Integrated Supply Chain at HCCB, remarked on the necessity of cooperation across all stages of the recycling value chain, from collection to end-use. He noted that the Thane Collection Centre represents an important step towards establishing a well-organised system that facilitates effective segregation of recyclable materials.

Kumar also highlighted that the partnership between HCCB and the Maharashtra government, as part of this initiative, aims to build sustainable supply chains while ensuring quality recycled materials are made available. This collaboration is expected to create systems that not only strengthen local industries but also support environmental sustainability across the region.

Future Expansion of the Initiative

The Maha r-PET Abhiyaan initiative is poised for further expansion in other regions, as Minister Munde indicated intentions to implement similar programmes in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Nashik as well. She noted that the initiative will also extend to Beed, highlighting the commitment to a broader state-wide impact.

This extensive network of recycling initiatives represents a crucial phase in addressing environmental challenges related to plastic waste in Maharashtra. The programme aims to foster a culture of responsible consumption and waste management, which will be essential for the future sustainability of communities across the state.

In conclusion, the collaborative effort of the Maharashtra government and HCCB under the Maha r-PET Abhiyaan serves as a pivotal movement towards a sustainable future, aiming to ensure a greener environment through improved recycling practices and community involvement.
