Government Forms Seven Empowered Groups to Tackle West Asia Crisis

In response to the changing dynamics in West Asia, the Government has formed seven empowered groups aimed at addressing key challenges and ensuring readiness across vital sectors. These groups will be tasked with developing strategies related to strategic and security issues, supply chain management, energy supplies including LPG, fertilizers, essential goods, logistics, and public communications.

Composition and Areas of Focus

The personnel and objectives for these groups have been clearly defined. The first group will focus on Strategic Issues, encompassing Defence, External Affairs, and Public Order. Headed by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri as the Convener, this group includes Home Secretary Govind Mohan and Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, along with senior officials from the Prime Minister’s Office and the Cabinet Secretariat.

The second group, addressing Economy, Finance, and Supply Chains, which includes export and import considerations, will be convened by Anuradha Thakur, Secretary of the Department of Economic Affairs. This group comprises senior officials from crucial economic ministries such as commerce, industry, labor, and expenditure.

The third group will concentrate on Petroleum, Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), and Energy. Neeraj Mittal, Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, will lead this team, which includes senior officers from related ministries like power, coal, and mining, as well as leaders from major public sector undertakings like ONGC, IOC, and GAIL.

The fourth group addresses Fertilizers and Agricultural Inputs. Convened by Rajat Kumar Mishra, Secretary of the Fertilizers department, it comprises senior officials from agricultural and fertilizer departments along with key representatives from prominent fertilizer organizations.

The fifth group, focused on Prices and Supply of Essential Commodities, will be led by Nidhi Khare, Secretary of the Department of Consumer Affairs. This group will supervise the availability and pricing of essential goods and include members from health, agriculture, and pharmaceutical sectors.

The sixth group will oversee Transport and Logistics, including sectors such as Civil Aviation, Shipping, and Railways. Convened by Vijay Kumar, Secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, this team comprises senior officials from civil aviation, road transport, and rail networks.

The final group will handle Information, Communication, and Public Engagement. This group will be directed by Sanjay Jaju, Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, and will manage public communications and outreach while involving participation from the Ministry of External Affairs and other relevant departments.

Proactive Government Measures

The establishment of these empowered groups signifies the Government’s proactive stance towards ensuring coordinated decision-making and responsive mechanisms in light of the ongoing crisis in West Asia. Through these measures, the Government aims to effectively navigate the complexities arising from the situation.
