Ghaziabad Landlady Strangled by Tenants Over Rent Dispute, Body Found in Suitcase

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a shocking incident in Rajnagar Extension, Ghaziabad, 32-year-old landlady Deepshikha Sharma was allegedly murdered by her tenants over unpaid rent. Police said Sharma visited her fifth-floor apartment late Wednesday to collect overdue rent when she failed to return home, raising suspicion with her domestic help.

Suspicious Behavior Leads to Discovery

The maid, noticing Sharma had not returned, went to the tenants’ flat. The couple’s unusual behavior prompted neighbors to alert police around 11:15 pm. Officers found Sharma’s body inside a red bag in the apartment.

The accused, Ajay Gupta, a transporter, and his wife Akriti Gupta, both in their early 30s, have been taken for questioning. Preliminary investigations indicate Sharma was strangled and suffered a head injury, possibly caused by a pressure cooker. Police clarified that social media rumors about dismemberment were false.

Victim’s Background and Rent Dispute

Sharma, a schoolteacher, owned two flats in the society. She lived on the first floor with her family and had rented the fifth-floor flat to the couple eight months ago for ₹18,000 per month. Police continue to investigate the circumstances of the murder.

Similar Case in Delhi Highlights Rent-Related Tensions

A separate case in Delhi saw a 65-year-old woman strangled and robbed by tenant Himanshu Yadav. Yadav, under financial stress from unpaid rent, allegedly strangled the victim after a confrontation. Police tracked him across eight states, eventually arresting him in Rohini. He had mortgaged stolen jewelry for Rs 70,000 while evading arrest for 75 days.

A case was registered and a team led by Inspector Ajay Sharma under the supervision of DCP (Crime) Pankaj Kumar began scanning CCTV footage from the area. Police spotted a man leaving the locality at an unusually early hour and identified him as Yadav, one of the tenants.

According to police, Yadav mortgaged the stolen jewellery in Bhiwani, Haryana, and received Rs 70,000. He remained on the run for nearly 75 days, frequently switching states to avoid detection.

These incidents highlight rising tensions between landlords and tenants in urban areas, with overdue rent disputes reportedly escalating into violent crimes.
