GE Aerospace Delivers Four F404 Engines to Bolster India’s Tejas Fighter Jet Program

The CSR Journal Magazine

On October 7, 2026, GE Aerospace, a major player in the defence sector, announced a significant milestone related to its supply commitments to India. The company confirmed the shipment of four F404-IN20 turbofan engines in September, reinforcing its long-standing partnership with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and the Indian Air Force (IAF). This strategic collaboration aims to support the indigenous Tejas fighter jet programme.

Previous Deliveries and Future Commitments

Prior to the recent dispatch, GE Aerospace had delivered three F404-IN20 engines to HAL in August 2023 for the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas programme. A spokesperson highlighted the importance of these deliveries, stating that the company is committed to ensuring a steady supply of engines necessary to power India’s indigenous fighter jets. The ongoing partnership focuses not only on shipment but also on enhancing the overall capabilities of the Indian defence sector.

As the deliveries roll out, HAL continues to receive F404 engines crucial for the Tejas Mk1A programme, which has previously encountered delays attributed to supply challenges. The assurance of additional shipments is vital for maintaining progress in the project, which aims to meet the Indian Air Force’s growing operational needs.

Former HAL Chairman DK Sunil discussed the delivery timeline in April 2023, indicating that GE had committed to supplying a total of 20 engines in the latter half of the year, specifically from June to December. Sunil expressed optimism based on conversations with GE officials, stating, “We have five engines, the sixth engine is ready now. It will be picked up shortly. They have told me they should do better.”

Impact on LCA Mk1A Production

The availability of engines is integral to the production and delivery of the LCA Mk1A aircraft. HAL has pointed out that while its production facility stands ready, the timeline for aircraft deliveries hinges on a consistent supply of GE’s F404 engines. Delayed engine deliveries have forced HAL to explore measures to ensure compliance with contractual agreements.

To mitigate the impact of previous disruptions, HAL has implemented contractual penalties on GE for any delays in deliveries of the F404 engines. HAL officials have stated that their contract includes provisions for liquidated damages if GE fails to meet the agreed delivery schedule. This contractual framework aims to hold the supplier accountable while ensuring that the production timelines for the Tejas remain intact.

With the Indian Air Force having placed an order for 180 LCA Mk1A aircraft from HAL, consistent shipments of these engines are vital to fulfilling the country’s expanding defence requirements. The Tejas programme is not only significant for national security but also reflects India’s commitment to self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
