On February 27, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage to renowned freedom fighter Chandrashekhar Azad, commemorating his immense sacrifice in the struggle for India’s independence. In a message shared on X, Modi expressed his respect for Azad, referring to him as a valiant son of Mother India who devoted his life to liberating the nation from colonial rule. The Prime Minister emphasised that Azad’s contributions to India’s freedom movement would be eternally remembered.

Amit Shah Remembers Azad’s Legacy

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also offered tributes to Azad, highlighting his unparalleled role in the independence movement. Shah characterized Azad’s life as a narrative filled with bravery, sacrifice, and steadfast patriotism. In his statement on X, he noted that Azad fought vigorously against the British Raj and remained committed to the fight until his last moments. Shah referenced Azad’s involvement in key events such as the Kakori Train Action and his leadership role in the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA), affirming that his life was fully dedicated to the cause of independence.

Chandrashekhar Azad: A Revolutionary Figure

Chandrashekhar Sitaram Tiwari, commonly known as Chandrasekhar Azad, originated from the Unnao district in what was then the United Provinces under British rule. Azad emerged as a leading revolutionary figure, organizing a cadre of youth dedicated to the freedom struggle. He played a crucial role in revitalizing the Hindustan Republican Association after many of its prominent members were either killed or captured. Following the execution of the organization’s founder, Ram Prasad Bismil, in 1927, Azad took over to continue his pioneering work.

His Revolutionary Actions

Azad’s commitment to opposing British rule was exemplified in August 1925 when he executed the daring act of pulling the emergency chain of a train traveling from Shahjahanpur to Lucknow to loot cash being transported. His bold actions were significant markers of his revolutionary spirit and determination against colonial authorities. Born on July 23, 1906, in Madhya Pradesh, he was ultimately martyred in Allahabad on February 27, 1931, during a confrontation with police forces.

Early Life and Inspiration

From a young age, Chandrashekhar Azad was motivated to fight for his country. He engaged in the Non-Cooperation Movement when he was just 15 years old, which laid the foundation for his lifelong dedication to India’s freedom struggle. Azad became widely recognized for his assertive declaration, “We will face the bullets of enemies. We were free, and we will remain free,” which has continued to inspire generations in the fight for liberty.
