As heavy rainfall continues in the mountainous regions of the Garhwal division, the water level of the Ganga River has experienced a notable increase. However, officials from the Central Water Commission in Rishikesh confirmed that the river is currently flowing below the established warning mark.

At Triveni Ghat, the Ganga is moving swiftly, prompting local authorities to remain vigilant. Despite the rising levels, officials emphasised that the situation is manageable at present. In response to the conditions, teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Water Police, and Disaster Relief Teams have been assigned to key ghats in Rishikesh, including Muni Ki Reti and Lakshman Jhula.

Safety Measures in Place for Residents and Visitors

Authorities are making efforts to keep both residents and visitors informed about the situation. Loudspeaker announcements are being utilised to advise devotees and tourists to remain cautious while bathing in the Ganga. Water Police Head Constable Harish Singh Gosai provided insight into the current conditions, stating that while the water level is presently below the warning threshold, it could rise further depending on ongoing rainfall in the mountains or if water is released from the Tehri Dam or Srinagar.

“The current water level of the Ganga is much below the warning level, but if it continues to rain in the mountains and water is released from the Tehri Dam or Srinagar, the water level could increase,” Gosai explained. He assured that teams were on the ground, monitoring the situation around the clock.

Regular communication efforts are being made to alert residents in nearby settlements such as Mayakund and Chandrabhaga. “We are constantly informing people living near the Ganga River through regular announcements,” added Gosai.

Flood Conditions in Madhya Pradesh

In related news, certain areas of Madhya Pradesh, particularly Satna and Chitrakoot, are grappling with flood-like conditions due to substantial rainfall and the rising water level of the Mandakini River. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav visited Chitrakoot and engaged with those affected by floods at the Chitrakoot Development Authority’s shelter, promising all possible assistance.

While the floods have caused considerable damage, Chief Minister Yadav reported that no fatalities have been recorded. “The flood has caused considerable damage. There has been no loss of life. I have met with the flood victims. I have also brought all the administrative officials here. These officials will stay for 2-3 days and are issuing instructions to manage the challenges following the flood,” he stated.

Satna Collector Satish Kumar indicated that the Mandakini River in Chitrakoot had risen approximately six metres above the maximum flood level but noted improvements in the situation. “Satna district received 10 to 12 centimetres of rainfall within three to four hours across most areas. Consequently, all rivers and streams in the district are in spate,” Kumar remarked.

He elaborated on the impact of the Mandakini River on local infrastructure, stating that while the situation is on the mend, some homes and shops faced damage due to high water levels. Collector Kumar reported that no casualties have occurred, although relief camps have been established for affected families. “More than 700 people have been rescued, with SDRF teams deployed on the ground,” he noted.

The Indian government has dispatched a forensic team to assist in identifying victims, while efforts to manage emergency situations continue in Assam, which has also faced extensive flooding impacting residential areas and agricultural lands.
