From Tech User to Global Leader: India All Set to Host Global South AI Summit in Delhi

The CSR Journal Magazine

ndia is preparing to host the first-ever Global South AI Summit in New Delhi, positioning itself as a key voice in shaping the future of artificial intelligence for developing nations. The summit reflects India’s broader ambition to move beyond being a consumer of AI technologies and instead become a contributor to global AI governance and innovation.

Why This Summit Matters

Artificial intelligence has rapidly transformed from a specialized research field into a powerful force shaping economies, governance systems, and everyday life. As advanced nations dominate AI research and regulation discussions, developing countries are seeking a stronger voice in setting global standards.

According to Abhishek Singh, CEO of the IndiaAI Mission, the summit aims to shift AI discussions from elite laboratories and corporate boardrooms to real-world implementation that benefits citizens. The focus is on ensuring AI serves public interest, particularly in emerging economies.

India’s Digital Experience as a Foundation

India’s case for leadership in this space is rooted in its decade-long experience with digital public infrastructure. Platforms such as Aadhaar, Unified Payments Interface, and DigiLocker have demonstrated how technology can be deployed at massive scale to serve millions.

These initiatives have positioned India as a laboratory for population-scale digital governance. Officials argue that lessons from these systems can guide AI adoption in healthcare, agriculture, education, and climate resilience across the Global South.

Building an Ethical and Regulatory Framework

A central theme of the summit is the development of what policymakers describe as a “techno-legal framework.” This approach blends regulatory oversight with technological safeguards.

India is exploring measures such as mandatory labeling of AI-generated content, time-bound removal of harmful material, bias mitigation systems, and tools to detect deepfakes. The objective is to balance innovation with safeguards against misinformation, discrimination, and misuse.

Countries participating in the summit are expected to discuss harmonized regulatory approaches that reflect varying levels of technological readiness across economies.

Workforce Transition and Human Capital

Automation and job displacement remain major global concerns. The summit will devote significant attention to reskilling and workforce transitions, particularly in developing economies where informal labor markets are large.

Plans include expanding AI data labs and training programs beyond metropolitan cities to smaller towns, ensuring broader participation in the AI economy.

Inclusion Through Language Technology

India is also emphasizing AI accessibility through Indian-language and voice-based platforms. By leveraging natural language processing, the government hopes to extend AI-driven services to non-English speakers, increasing digital inclusion across rural and semi-urban populations.

While Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang is no longer expected to attend due to scheduling constraints, the company will send a senior delegation. Their participation highlights global industry interest in India’s growing AI ecosystem.

A Strategic Shift

By hosting the Global South AI Summit, India signals its intention to play a more proactive role in international AI discussions. The event underscores a broader transition: from adopting global technologies to helping shape the rules and frameworks governing them.

As AI increasingly influences economic growth, governance, and societal development, India’s initiative may redefine how emerging economies engage with the technology,  not merely as users, but as co-architects of its future.
