Fresh Protests Erupt in Pakistan Over Imran Khan’s Health and Allegations Against Officials

The CSR Journal Magazine

The political landscape in Pakistan is witnessing heightened unrest with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) organizing demonstrations on Wednesday. These protests are largely fueled by alarming reports regarding the deteriorating eyesight of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is currently imprisoned. Protesters blocked the main route connecting Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and held a sit-in near the Parliament in Islamabad.

This escalation follows claims from Khan’s sisters, who allege that he is being subjected to severe mistreatment while incarcerated. They specifically accused Mohsin Naqvi, the interior minister and Pakistan Cricket Board chief, of threatening them in relation to their brother’s condition.

Legal Reports Heighten Family Concerns

The unrest has grown in intensity following comments from a lawyer appointed by the Supreme Court, who stated that the former cricketer might be losing his vision. The attorney detailed in a seven-page report that Khan is likely facing permanent damage to his eyesight and currently has only 15% vision in his right eye.

In light of these developments, his family has continuously sought immediate contact with him; however, their requests have not received a favorable response.

Serious Allegations Against Key Military Figures

Imran Khan’s sisters, Uzma Khan and Aleema Khan, have intensified the situation by accusing military officials, including Army Chief Asim Munir, of orchestrating a conspiracy to harm their brother while in custody.

During a press conference, Uzma stated that they have received threats from Mohsin Naqvi and emphasized a commitment to seek accountability should their brother suffer any further harm. Noreen Niazi, another of Khan’s sisters, has also implicated Munir, suggesting the deteriorating health of her brother is a result of systemic mistreatment.

Official Medical Assessments and Family Reactions

Complications have further emerged as the government refused to allow a family representative to be present during Khan’s medical evaluations. A government-appointed medical board recently asserted significant improvement in Khan’s eyesight.

According to one of the board’s members, Khan has shown ability to see the clock on the wall, signaling progress. However, PTI’s general secretary countered these claims, indicating that Khan’s family disputes the board’s assertions of improvement in his condition.

International Attention on Imran Khan’s Health

The issue has garnered global scrutiny, with former legendary cricketers, including Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev, advocating for immediate medical assistance for Khan.

This is not the first instance of public outcry regarding his health; protests previously erupted in November when there were rumors of his death in custody. Demonstrations halted only when a family member was permitted to visit him. As public discontent grows over Khan’s situation, his supporters remain steadfast in their demand for urgent medical intervention.
