The Janata Dal United (JDU) has taken significant action against Anant Singh, the MLA from Mokama, by expelling him from the party for six years. This decision also includes the immediate cancellation of his primary membership. Alongside Singh, his wife Neelam Devi, a former MLA, has been subjected to the same exclusion period. The party’s actions are reportedly linked to Singh’s alleged support for candidates from rival parties during the recent legislative council elections.

According to the party, Singh campaigned against JDU’s official candidate, Neeraj Kumar, which constitutes a breach of party discipline. The JDU has accused him of consistently disregarding party directives and engaging in activities detrimental to the party’s interests. The expulsion order was issued by Umesh Singh Kushwaha, the state president of JDU, who outlined the reasons for this disciplinary action.

The order specifically highlights that Singh’s actions during the elections were not only against the party’s interests but also involved promoting candidates from other political parties. This behaviour has been classified as indiscipline, leading to the decision to revoke his primary membership and impose a six-year exclusion from the party.

Action Against Neelam Devi

In addition to Anant Singh, the JDU has also taken steps against Neelam Devi, revoking her primary membership with immediate effect and imposing a six-year exclusion. The party’s order indicated that she was involved in activities that were contrary to the party’s interests. This dual action against both Singh and his wife reflects the party’s stance on maintaining discipline among its members.

The JDU’s decision to act against Neelam Devi further underscores its commitment to upholding party principles and discouraging any form of dissent within its ranks. The party has made it clear that it will not tolerate actions that undermine its candidates or support rival parties, thus reinforcing its internal governance.

The situation highlights the challenges faced by political parties in managing member conduct, especially during crucial election periods. The JDU’s swift response indicates its intention to maintain a united front and ensure that all members align with the party’s objectives.

Recommendation for Assembly Membership Cancellation

The JDU has also initiated steps to recommend the cancellation of Anant Singh’s assembly membership. The party has approached the Speaker of the Bihar Legislative Assembly, requesting the termination of Singh’s membership under the Tenth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. This recommendation is part of the party’s broader strategy to address the perceived misconduct of its members.

It is important to note the distinction between the expulsion from the party and the cancellation of assembly membership. While the JDU has expelled Singh from its ranks, the final decision regarding his assembly membership remains pending and will be determined through the appropriate constitutional processes.

This situation exemplifies the intricate relationship between party discipline and legislative membership, as the JDU navigates the complexities of internal governance and external representation. The outcome of this recommendation will have implications not only for Singh but also for the party’s future strategies in maintaining discipline and coherence among its members.
