A court in Bareilly district, Uttar Pradesh, has sentenced four individuals to rigorous life imprisonment in connection with the murder of a farmer. This decision was announced on Saturday following a judgement delivered by Additional District and Sessions Judge Kuldeep Kumar. The accused—Sherpal, Radheshyam, Rajveer, and Rambabu—were convicted for their involvement in the case that dates back to February 22, 2017. In addition to the prison sentences, the court imposed a total fine of Rs 88,000 on the defendants.

Circumstances Surrounding the Incident

The case involves the killing of Harishankar, also known as Bhure, who was a resident of Saidapur village. According to the police complaint filed by his brother, Om Prakash, Harishankar was attacked while working in a field. The prosecution asserts that the accused arrived at the scene armed and opened fire on Harishankar with the intent to kill him. Witnesses present during the incident included Harishankar’s wife Shakuntala, his nephew Mahesh, and his mother Omwati.

Reports indicate that Harishankar sustained a gunshot wound that resulted in his immediate death. Shakuntala, attempting to intervene during the attack, was reportedly assaulted with the butt of a country-made pistol, leading to injuries to her eye. Following the incident, the accused are said to have fled the scene as villagers responded to the commotion caused by the shooting.

An FIR was subsequently registered at Faridpur police station, encompassing charges under Sections 302, 323, and 504 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The prosecution’s case relied on testimonies from ten witnesses as presented during the trial phase.

Trial Proceedings and Witness Testimonies

The trial featured extensive proceedings, with the prosecution, represented by Additional District Government Counsel Rajeshwari Gangwar, calling multiple witnesses to support their case. These testimonies were essential in establishing the sequence of events leading to Harishankar’s death. The court took careful consideration of the evidence presented before reaching its verdict on the culpability of the accused.

Throughout the trial, the defense maintained that the evidence brought against the accused was insufficient to warrant a conviction. Despite this, the court concluded that there was adequate proof of premeditated intent to kill, which led to the life sentences handed down to the four men.

The judgement underscores the seriousness with which the legal system addresses violent crimes, particularly those involving fatalities. As part of the sentencing, the court has also stipulated additional imprisonment for the convicted individuals should they fail to comply with the financial penalties imposed.
