Ex-CDS General Anil Chauhan Assumes Leadership at Vivekananda International Foundation

The CSR Journal Magazine

General Anil Chauhan, former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), has officially taken over as the director of the Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF). His appointment marks a significant transition into the national security and strategic policy domain, only a few months following his retirement from India’s premier military position. Chauhan began his role on October 5, 2026.

The VIF welcomed Chauhan, emphasising that his entry signifies a new chapter for the organisation. Alongside this change, they acknowledged the contributions of the previous director, Dr Arvind Gupta, who served as the Deputy National Security Adviser before leading the foundation.

Background of Anil Chauhan

Chauhan, recognised as India’s second CDS, concluded his military service on May 30, 2026, after more than three years in the role. His tenure included significant responsibilities such as Secretary of the Department of Military Affairs and Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee. He was appointed to the post of CDS on September 30, 2022.

It follows his prior roles as Eastern Army Commander and Director General of Military Operations. Throughout his distinguished career, Chauhan played a crucial role in advocating military reforms and promoting the concept of joint operations among the armed forces. He also contributed to discussions on the proposed theatre command structure.

His accolades include prestigious awards such as the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), Vishisht Seva Medal (VM), and the Sena Medal (VSM). Commissioned into the 11 Gorkha Rifles in 1981, Chauhan commanded various formations including an infantry division in Baramulla and a corps in the Northeast before leading the Eastern Command.

Significance of VIF’s Mandate

Chauhan’s new position at VIF places him at the forefront of an organisation that bridges the areas of national security, foreign policy, and geopolitics. Established in 2009 under the stewardship of National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, the VIF aims to foster dialogue among policymakers, engage with the diplomatic landscape, and produce comprehensive policy briefs and research in strategic affairs.

The foundation’s executive committee is chaired by S Gurumurthy, which highlights its commitment to addressing contemporary issues in national defence and global strategies. Chauhan’s extensive background in military and defence policy is expected to enhance the foundation’s research output and strategic discussions.

This appointment attracts further attention because Doval himself held the position of director at VIF prior to assuming his role as National Security Adviser in 2014. Thus, Chauhan’s transition into this role reflects continuity and strategic importance within India’s policy formation framework.
