Emergency Slide Evacuation at Antalya Airport After Smoke Detected on Turkish Airlines Boeing 777

The CSR Journal Magazine

Late Tuesday, a Turkish Airlines Boeing 777 aircraft from Istanbul caused panic at Antalya Airport when smoke was detected coming from its landing gear shortly after a normal landing. According to officials, the drama unfolded as the plane was taxiing on the runway and ground crews, along with the air traffic controller, noticed the worrying sign. The controller quickly informed the flight crew, leading airline and airport emergency teams to rush to the scene without delay.

All 247 passengers and 13 crew members on board were evacuated promptly and safely using the aircraft’s emergency slides. No injuries have been reported, much to the relief of both officials and family members awaiting at the airport. Visuals of the incident circulated widely on social media, showing adults and children making their way down the deployed slides, while fire crews hurried to douse the smouldering landing gear with water.

Turkish Airlines spokesperson Yahya Üstün revealed that technical teams immediately began inspecting the Boeing 777 after the evacuation. Preliminary findings indicated the smoke was a result of a malfunction in a hydraulic pipe in the landing gear section. Such technical issues are uncommon but always taken seriously in the airline industry, especially in light of global safety protocols. Authorities highlighted the swift response and clear coordination between the airport control tower, Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting teams (ARFF), and airline staff, which ensured everyone’s safety.

“Thanks to the professionalism of our air traffic control and ARFF teams, the situation was brought under control quickly,” said Enes Çakmak, leader of Turkey’s General Directorate of State Airports Authority. He also expressed hope that such incidents do not occur again. The aircraft was later towed from the runway after the successful technical inspection.

This incident comes just days after another airline faced similar trouble with its landing gear, highlighting the important role of regular aircraft maintenance and the effectiveness of emergency preparedness among airline and airport staff. Despite the frightening moments, passengers later expressed gratitude for the quick action of the crew and emergency teams.

Turkish Airlines confirmed that a detailed investigation is underway to determine the exact reason for the hydraulic malfunction, and assured all passengers that their safety remains the airline’s highest priority. As of now, normal operations have resumed at Antalya Airport, and counselling services are being offered to passengers who experienced the scare during the emergency evacuation.
