Election Commission Full Bench Meets Political Parties in Bengal: Zero Tolerance for Violence Pledged

The CSR Journal Magazine

As West Bengal gears up for the upcoming Assembly elections, the full bench of the Election Commission of India (ECI) held a series of high-stakes meetings with representatives from seven major political parties. The discussions, aimed at ensuring a smooth electoral process, centered on security concerns and the logistical timeline of the polls.

Key Demands from Political Players

The Commission met individually with delegates from the ruling party, the primary opposition, and the Left-Congress alliance. While the specific agendas varied, a common thread emerged:

Two-Phase Election: A significant majority of the political parties urged the Commission to conduct the polls in just two phases.

Security Concerns: The BJP submitted a 16-point memorandum, emphasizing the need for a fear-free environment and heightened security to prevent electoral malpractice.

Voter List Revisions: While most parties expressed satisfaction with the recent intensive purification of the voter scrolls, some leaders, including Chandrima Bhattacharya and Md. Salim, raised concerns regarding the Special Information Report (SIR) process immediately following the meeting.

The Commission’s Stance: “Zero Tolerance”

In an official press statement released after the deliberations, Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar reassured stakeholders of the ECI’s commitment to transparency. He maintained that the Commission would adopt a “zero tolerance” policy toward any form of violence or irregularity.

“The Commission is determined to conduct free, fair, and peaceful elections in the state. We expect full cooperation from all political entities to uphold the sanctity of the democratic process,” Kumar stated.

What Lies Ahead?

Regarding the popular demand for a two-phase election, the Commission noted the request but remained non-committal. The ECI clarified that the final schedule and the number of phases are currently under evaluation and will be decided based on security assessments and logistical feasibility.

The meeting concludes the first leg of the Commission’s visit to Bengal, signaling that the state is now officially entering election mode.
