External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently called for enhanced supply chain resilience during his address at the Foreign Service Institute in Accra, Ghana, on October 7. He highlighted the significance of fuel, food, fertiliser, and finance in maintaining strong supply chains, emphasising the rights of the Global South to industrialise. Jaishankar’s remarks were made in the context of India’s foreign policy, which he characterised as focusing on strategic autonomy.

In his speech, Jaishankar expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to address a distinguished gathering, sharing insights into the relations between India, Africa, and the broader Global South. He remarked that diplomacy in contemporary circumstances should effectively manage competition while fostering cooperation, even amidst divergent interests.

India’s Economic Position and Future Aspirations

Jaishankar further elaborated on India’s economic transformation, detailing the nation’s ambition and execution across various sectors. He pointed to significant developments in infrastructure, the digital ecosystem, manufacturing, and entrepreneurship, stating that these facets are positioning India as a crucial engine for global growth.

The Minister established a connection between national security and supply chain resilience, asserting the country’s dedication to becoming self-sufficient in essential sectors while advocating cooperation in other areas. He stated that India is committed to maintaining technological capabilities and the ability to produce crucial goods, thereby enhancing its national security framework.

Touching on the digital ecosystem, Jaishankar asserted that it plays a key role in creating equitable opportunities. He indicated India’s readiness to collaborate with African nations by sharing its experiences and technological advancements, aiming to empower the youthful populations of both regions through skill development.

Advocacy for the Global South and Resilient Economies

Jaishankar highlighted several global economic challenges, reiterating the necessity for robust supply chains. He underscored the right of the Global South to industrialise, framing it as a fundamental principle of India’s foreign policy. He declared that India’s strategic outlook is primarily guided by the principle of autonomy, aiming to foster partnerships that enhance options rather than restrict them.

He also reiterated India’s commitment to amplifying the voice of the Global South, citing the inclusion of the African Union in the G20 during India’s presidency as a significant step. Jaishankar expressed his vision for a reformed global order that favours the development and prosperity of African nations and the Global South.
