Disruptions at Delhi Airport Leave Passengers Stranded Amid Iran-Israel Tensions

The CSR Journal Magazine

The escalating conflict between Iran and Israel has drastically affected flight operations at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in New Delhi. Numerous flights scheduled to the Middle East have been canceled, leaving many passengers in a difficult situation.

One traveler in the travel industry reported that the cancellations have obstructed crucial journeys to Mecca and Medina ahead of Ramadan. “An Air India flight from Mumbai that was set to carry some of my clients was canceled, and we have received little to no information on its rescheduling,” the traveler stated, highlighting the challenges travelers face during this sensitive time.

Another passenger, Rafia Khan, who was at the airport to send off her parents, expressed her gratitude for the airport staff amidst the uncertainty. “We were informed that flights to Saudi Arabia were still on time, which provided some relief amid the chaos,” she said, acknowledging the compassion shown by the staff during a distressing period.

Official Advisory and Flight Statistics

The Delhi Airport management has issued a travel advisory via their official X account due to the ongoing geopolitical situation. The advisory cautioned, “Given the evolving political climate in the Middle East, westbound international flights are currently facing disruptions and schedule modifications. Passengers are encouraged to verify the latest flight specifics with their airlines before arriving at the airport.” Furthermore, the advisory underscored the importance of relying on official channels for accurate information during this challenging time. Sources indicate that on a single day, 100 flights—60 departures and 40 arrivals—were canceled at IGI Airport. This spike in cancellations happened as several countries in West Asia closed their airspaces in response to the renewed conflict.

Airlines Adjust Operations Amid Safety Concerns

IndiGo Airlines announced that if flights traversing Middle Eastern airspace are impacted, customers will be notified directly through the contact information provided at the time of booking. The airline also advised passengers to explore alternative travel options or seek refunds for major inconveniences through their website. Additionally, Akasa Air revealed it has suspended all flights to and from Abu Dhabi, Doha, Jeddah, Kuwait, and Riyadh until March 2 due to safety issues stemming from the conflict. An official statement from Akasa Air noted, “We are making careful decisions in response to the evolving situation in the Middle East, as part of our ongoing commitment to safety and responsible operations.” Passengers affected by the disruptions until March 7 have been offered the choice of full refunds or the possibility of rescheduling without additional charges, with the airline’s teams reaching out to assist impacted travelers.

Heightened Regional Tensions and Emergency Measures

The backdrop of these flight disruptions is the heightened fear of an expanding regional conflict. Israel has declared a nationwide state of emergency, leading to significant precautionary measures, including relocating hospitals underground and activating air raid sirens. In parallel, Iran, Israel, and Iraq have all closed their airspace, leading to the suspension of flights in the area. As the situation continues to develop, public concern and emergency preparations intensify, reflecting the broader implications of the ongoing conflict.
