Harassment of Bengali speaking people outside Bengal
In recent times, Bengali-speaking people are reportedly being subjected to harassment in other stated of India. Atrocities against Bengalis on the suspicion of being Bangladeshis have repeatedly hit the headlines lately. Sometimes they are beaten, sometimes water and electricity is being cut off in the area they live in. There have even been cases of Bengalis being detained at the police station and tortured on suspicion of being Bangladeshi despite showing proper documents and valid credentials.
Mamata Banerjee on harassment of Bengalis
On July 21, Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the party’s All India General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee raised this issue from the stage of Martyrs’ Day function in Kolkata. Abhishek made it clear that this oppression against the people of the state, especially the Bengali speaking people, will not be tolerated. He questioned the BJP and said that there are many people in the state who have come here from other states. If there is no oppression against them in Bengal, then why should there be oppression against Bengali-speaking people in other states?
