Did a Fifth-Grader Cross the Line on Kaun Banega Crorepati 17?

The CSR Journal Magazine

A fifth standard student hailing from Gandhinagar, Gujarat, named Ishit Bhatt, has become the centre of discussion on social media post his appearance on Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) Season 17. He has become the centre of talking points not because of his knowledge but for his tone and approach while answering the questions and talking to the host of the show, Amitabh Bachchan. His approach and behaviour are taken as disrespectful by social media users and is being criticized, and a debate is happening on parenting.

What happened throughout the show?

Right from the start of the show, Bhatt made an impression that he was confident when he said to Amitabh Bachchan, “Mere ko rules pata hai, isliye aap mereko abhi rules samjhane mat baithna,” (I am aware of the rule, so please avoid explaining it to me). Initially, it seemed that he was confident, but later it was clear that he was rude and overconfident. For instance, he kept on telling the host, “Arre option daalo!” (Give options fast). Another instance: when Amitabh Bachchan asked if he could lock the answer, he promptly said, “Sir, ek kya, uss mein chaar lock lagado, lekin lock karo!” (Sir, you can lock this answer not once but four times!). His overconfidence made him make a mistake; on one question related to Ramayana, he answered wrong and had to leave the show empty-handed.

What did Amitabh Bachchan say?

When asked about the matter, Amitabh Bachchan said, “Kabhi kabhi bachhe overconfidence mein galti kar dete hai” (Sometimes children make mistakes due to overconfidence). His clip has gone viral and created a storm on social media. There is a debate on the thin line between knowledge and overconfidence.

Backlash at the time of TRP drop

Some social media users came in defence of Bhatt, a few targeted the child and his parents, and others targeted the producer of the show.

One of the users wrote, “It’s okay if your child has knowledge, but if he doesn’t have manners or doesn’t know how to speak in front of elders, he can never be successful. If I were in Amitabh Bachchan’s place, I would slap him twice and then ask questions.” Another user wrote, “Perfect ending. Arrogance got schooled. Maybe now the parents will learn — raising a brat isn’t parenting, it’s public nuisance training.”

There were many users who said the episode was scripted and criticised producers. Playback singer Chinmayi Sripaada called Bhatt “most hated kid” and even criticized social media attackers. She wrote on X, “Adults here on Twitter have been one of the most lousy, foul-mouthed, abusive lot; none of these voices said a thing when kids died due to a cough syrup. But yeah, pick on a kid. Says a LOT about the ecosystem. This entire lot is picking on one over-excited kid — what a horrible bunch of bullies these have raised themselves to be.”

Many pointed out that the controversy could be a created one, as the TRP of Kaun Banega Crorepati 17 reportedly has gone down. Undoubtedly, Bhatt’s appearance has triggered conversations.
