Diageo India’s Alwar Distillery Achieves Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) Platinum Certification under AWS Standard V2.0

The CSR Journal Magazine

Diageo India (United Spirits Limited) today announced that its Alwar distillery in Rajasthan has been awarded the prestigious Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) Platinum Certification under the AWS International Water Stewardship Standard V2.0 (AWS Standard). This recognition marks the highest level of certification under the global AWS framework and reinforces Diageo India’s leadership in responsible water management within the beverage alcohol sector.

This certification recognises the Alwar distillery’s advanced, sustained performance in driving measurable water stewardship outcomes in the Ruparel Basin catchment. Valid until 2 February 2029 (subject to external independent annual surveillance) the certification follows the site’s earlier AWS Core certification in 2023 and builds on its distinction as the first spirits distillery in Asia to receive AWS certification.

AWS Platinum is awarded to sites that demonstrate leadership and consistent progress in addressing shared water challenges at a catchment level. The certification validates Alwar’s outcomes-led approach across all five AWS outcomes:

  • Strong water governance

  • Sustainable water balance

  • Good water quality status

  • Protection of important water-related areas

  • Safe water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) for all

At Alwar, these outcomes have been achieved through a structured, catchment-based strategy that identifies water-related risks and opportunities and translates them into measurable interventions aligned with AWS requirements. The distillery’s efforts span operational water-use efficiency improvements, water replenishment initiatives in water-stressed areas, collaborative catchment engagement, and community-focused WASH programmes.

‘Preserve Water for Life’ remains an important pillar of Diageo India’s ‘Spirit of Progress’ ESG action plan. Across its operations, the company continues to enhance water efficiency, scale replenishment initiatives in water-stressed regions, and embed long-term, community-centric solutions that strengthen water resilience for both people and ecosystems.

Devashish Dasgupta, Director, Corporate Relations, Diageo India (United Spirits Limited), said, “The AWS Platinum certification reflects the sustained focus, rigour and collaborative effort behind our water stewardship journey at Alwar. Building on our earlier Core certification, this recognition reinforces our commitment to responsible water management that delivers measurable, catchment-level outcomes for communities, ecosystems and industry alike, aligned with our Spirit of Progress agenda.”

Scott McCready, Chief Strategy Officer, Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) said “Our Platinum certification recognises organisations that demonstrate leadership, transparency and sustained progress against the AWS Standard. United Spirits Limited’s Alwar site has shown credible, independently verified performance in advancing water stewardship outcomes within the Ruparel Basin. Such site-level leadership plays an important role in strengthening collective action for shared water resources.”
