Delhi Reports 98 Dengue Cases in First Week of October, Total Reaches 695

The CSR Journal Magazine

Delhi experienced a rise in dengue cases, with 98 new infections reported in the first week of October, bringing the total for the year to 695, according to a report from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). September recorded the highest monthly count, with 286 cases documented. These numbers highlight a concerning trend in the prevalence of vector-borne diseases in the city.

In addition to dengue, Delhi has also noted 23 cases of malaria thus far in October, raising the cumulative figure for the year to 266. The city’s health department has yet to report any fatalities attributable to either dengue or malaria in 2026, suggesting that while cases are rising, mortality rates remain stable.

The weekly vector-borne disease report for the week ending October 3 indicates that September was significant for malaria as well, involving 124 cases, the highest monthly total for this disease so far this year. In August, Delhi reported 90 dengue cases alongside 53 malaria cases, demonstrating ongoing public health challenges related to mosquito-borne illnesses.

Recent Chikungunya Cases

Alongside dengue and malaria statistics, Delhi reported two new chikungunya cases during the first week of October, thereby matching the monthly tally for the disease at two. The total number of chikungunya cases this year has now reached 29. The city had previously recorded eight cases in August and five cases in September, indicating a steady incidence of this disease as well.

Health authorities have noted that no deaths related to chikungunya have been reported in 2026, further reflecting efforts to manage and contain these vector-borne diseases. The integrated approach taken by health officials aims to mitigate transmission risks and protect the public.

The presence of various mosquito-borne diseases raises public health concerns. As Delhi continues to navigate these challenges, health authorities remain vigilant in tracing and monitoring outbreaks.

Vector Control Measures Undertaken by MCD

In response to the increased cases of dengue and malaria, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has intensified vector control and enforcement activities across all civic zones. Such initiatives are crucial to curbing the spread of diseases that are transmitted by mosquitoes.

According to the report, domestic breeding checkers have made over 3.18 crore house visits this year, identifying mosquito breeding in more than 1.89 lakh households. The proactive measures taken aim to educate residents about maintaining hygiene and reducing breeding sites.

The MCD has issued a considerable number of legal notices—1,32,172—in response to conditions that foster mosquito breeding. Furthermore, there have been 20,882 prosecutions, accumulating a penalty total of Rs 29.70 lakh during the year. These actions underline the organisation’s commitment to combat mosquito-borne diseases and promote public awareness.

Overall, the situation in Delhi regarding vector-borne diseases such as dengue, malaria, and chikungunya emphasises the importance of ongoing public health initiatives. As authorities continue their efforts, monitoring and response strategies remain a focal point for safeguarding community health.
