The Greater Chennai Corporation has ramped up its vector control and dengue prevention initiatives in response to a significant rise in reported cases. A total of 650 dengue cases have been recorded in September alone, according to a senior official from the Corporation. The city’s 15 zones are now actively monitored by a workforce of 3,597 individuals tasked with inspecting residences and eliminating potential mosquito breeding sites.

Vigilance in Educational Institutions and Public Spaces

Each worker has been assigned the responsibility of inspecting between eighty and one hundred households daily, covering all wards. Their efforts target the identification and removal of various breeding sources, including discarded items such as tyres and coconut shells, as well as neglected open spaces in commercial complexes, construction sites, and government facilities.

In response to the growing threat, the corporation has begun imposing fines on commercial establishments identified as having active mosquito breeding habitats. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to encourage compliance with health regulations and to eliminate conducive environments for dengue transmission.

Larvicidal Measures and Fogging Operations

As part of its preventive measures, the Chennai Corporation is employing larvicidal substances like Abate solution in water storage tanks. Additionally, Mosquito Larvicidal Oil is being utilised in canals and stormwater drains to further reduce mosquito populations. The Corporation has also continued regular indoor and outdoor fogging operations to control adult mosquitoes effectively throughout the city.

The ongoing efforts reflect a comprehensive approach to tackle the mosquito menace and minimise potential outbreaks in densely populated areas. These operations not only reduce the mosquito population but also contribute significantly to community health and safety.

Moreover, the Corporation is ensuring that sufficient stocks of essential medicines are available at various health facilities. These include Urban Primary Health Centres, Urban Community Health Centres, and Health and Wellness Centres, all of which have received refresher training on fever management.

Enhanced Surveillance and Monitoring of Patients

Integrating fever surveillance across hospitals, clinics, and diagnostic laboratories enables the health authorities to closely monitor discharged fever patients for three consecutive days. This strategic initiative enhances the medical response to the dengue situation and ensures timely interventions.

The comprehensive framework deployed by the Greater Chennai Corporation demonstrates its commitment to public health in light of the recent dengue cases. Authorities are working diligently to address this challenge with urgency and dedication, balancing immediate action with ongoing health education efforts within the community.
