Delhi Police Initiates Legal Action Over Youth Congress Protest at AI Summit

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Delhi Police have commenced legal proceedings against members of the Indian Youth Congress who conducted a protest at the Bharat Mandapam on Friday, February 20. According to Additional Commissioner of Police Devesh Mahla, the event took place around 12:30 PM. The protestors reportedly registered online for the summit and were initially dressed in sweaters and jackets over T-shirts considered objectionable. As the protest unfolded near Hall Number 5, one individual reportedly removed his outer garments and displayed the T-shirt in defiance.

Detained Individuals Identified

The police official indicated that appropriate legal measures are being taken and that efforts are underway to identify additional participants. Four individuals have already been detained, with their identities confirmed as Krishna Hari, 35, a National Secretary from Bihar; Kundan Yadav, also from Bihar; Ajay Kumar; and Narasimha Yadav, the National Coordinator of the Youth Congress. Authorities are in the process of identifying other attendees involved in the protest.

Youth Congress National President’s Defense

Uday Bhanu Chib, the National President of the Indian Youth Congress, defended the actions of the party’s members, asserting that the demonstration encapsulated the frustrations of unemployed youth nationwide. In statements to the media, Chib emphasized that the slogans raised during the protest, including claims that “the Prime Minister is compromised,” reflected the sentiments shared among young people struggling to find employment. He alleged that the ongoing trade negotiations with the United States would have detrimental effects on farmers and the general populace.

Party’s Response to Police Action

Chib expressed that the Youth Congress would not be intimidated by the legal actions described by the Delhi Police. He asserted the commitment of the protestors as supporters of Rahul Gandhi, stating that they would persist in their efforts to raise awareness for the youth in India. Accusations were also directed at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regarding attempts to suppress opposition voices, with Chib affirming that the Youth Congress remains dedicated to advocating for constitutional rights.

BJP Criticism of the Protest

BJP National Spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla criticized the Youth Congress for their actions at the AI Summit, describing the protest as lacking substance and emotional purpose. He claimed that such demonstrations undermined national progress, contending that the AI Summit was receiving international acclaim, with notable figures expressing their support. Poonawalla argued that the Congress party’s stance was indicative of a broader anti-national sentiment and branded it as an infringement on India’s achievements in technology.

Conclusion of Protest Activities

Prior to the legal actions taken by the police, Indian Youth Congress members held a demonstrative ‘shirtless’ protest outside the summit venue while asserting that the government’s policies contradicted national interests. The police subsequently detained several demonstrators and have indicated that further legal actions are expected as the situation develops.
