Delhi Police Bust Inter-State Child Trafficking Racket, Arrest 13 and Rescue Five Infants

The CSR Journal Magazine

Delhi Police has unearthed an alleged inter-state child trafficking racket that investigators believe sold around 30 infants across multiple states over the past one and a half years. So far, 13 people, including alleged traffickers, middlemen, buyers and a private hospital owner, have been arrested, while five infants have been rescued.

According to police, the network targeted economically vulnerable families, including those living in tribal areas of Rajasthan and Gujarat, and allegedly sold newborns and infants to childless couples in Delhi, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and other states. The babies were reportedly purchased for as little as Rs 10,000 to Rs 20,000 and sold for between Rs 6 lakh and Rs 10 lakh after forged birth and medical records were prepared.

Police Probe Reveals Organised Trafficking Network

Investigators said the racket operated through a network of suppliers, transporters and intermediaries who facilitated the movement and sale of infants.

The syndicate allegedly relied on private hospitals and contacts linked to fertility treatment services to identify prospective buyers.

A senior police officer said evidence collected during the investigation indicates that nearly 30 children may have been trafficked by the group over the last 18 months.

“The gang had developed an organised system where infants were sourced from vulnerable families and routed through facilitators before being handed over to buyers under fabricated identities,” the officer said.

Decoy Operation Leads to Major Breakthrough

The case came to light after Delhi Police conducted a decoy operation near the R K Ashram Metro Station in Paharganj on June 5.

During the operation, three individuals were allegedly caught while attempting to sell a newborn baby who was only four to five days old.

Subsequent raids led to the arrest of several more accused, including a freelance laboratory technician, a driver, a domestic worker and the owner of a private hospital in outer Delhi.

Police alleged that the hospital owner played a significant role in sheltering trafficked infants and facilitating the preparation of forged documents.

Major Supplier Arrested in Gujarat

Investigators said one of the syndicate’s principal suppliers, identified as Saybabhai Ghamar alias Kalia, was arrested in Gujarat on June 17.

Police are now working to trace the biological parents of the rescued infants and identify other children allegedly sold by the network.

Authorities are also attempting to establish the identities and whereabouts of additional children believed to have been trafficked through the syndicate.

Child Welfare Committee Takes Custody of Rescued Infants

The five rescued babies have been placed under the care of the Child Welfare Committee, which has ordered measures for their rehabilitation and welfare.

According to police, the investigation has uncovered a structured trafficking operation in which infants were allegedly procured from vulnerable families, provided with fake identities and sold across state boundaries for substantial sums.

Officials said efforts are continuing to locate more children linked to the racket and determine the full extent of the operation.
