Delhi Police Bust Illegal LPG Racket in Sangam Vihar, Seize 183 Cylinders; 4 Arrested

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Crime Branch of the Delhi Police has apprehended four individuals in an illegal liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) racket in the Sangam Vihar area. Officials reported on Wednesday that a total of 183 Indane gas cylinders were seized from the storage facilities used by delivery agents. The recovered cylinders included 154 filled and 29 empty. The arrested suspects have been identified as Sher Singh, Suraj Parihar, Raghu Raj Singh, and Jitender Sharma.

Modus Operandi Uncovered

Investigations revealed that the accused were registered delivery personnel working for an authorized gas agency. Instead of transporting the cylinders to customers, they allegedly diverted the supply to rented storage locations. This unlawful operation involved not only hoarding but also refilling the cylinders, disguised as legitimate business activities. A case has been filed under the Essential Commodities Act, as well as applicable sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and further investigations are ongoing.

Political Response to LPG Supply Issues

The reported LPG supply challenges arise amid ongoing conflicts in West Asia, impacting global oil and gas markets. In response, the government has prioritized the use of domestically produced natural gas for LPG production, compressed natural gas (CNG), and piped cooking gas. Efforts to enhance distribution have included accelerating the processing of city gas projects and increasing LPG allocations to vital sectors in light of the shifting geopolitical landscape.

Government Clarifies LPG Booking Policies

In light of rising public concerns, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has clarified that there have been no changes to the LPG refill booking timeframe. The ministry confirmed that established guidelines remain unchanged: customers in urban areas can expect a 25-day waiting period for refills, while those in rural areas may wait up to 45 days, regardless of the type of connection. Citizens have been advised to avoid spreading misinformation and engaging in panic booking, as officials assured that sufficient LPG stocks are available and no immediate cause for alarm exists.
