The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has commenced a comprehensive clean-up and beautification initiative across the city in preparation for the upcoming BRICS Summit, which is scheduled to take place from September 12 to 13, 2026. This initiative places a strong emphasis on improving cleanliness, managing stray animals, and enhancing the appearance of critical venues and roadways designated for the visiting delegates.

Details from the Review Meeting

On August 27, 2026, a review meeting was convened where MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar provided directives to senior officials and zonal deputy commissioners. During this meeting, he underscored the urgency of prioritising the summit preparations and emphasised the need for thorough oversight. He cautioned that any lapses associated with cleanliness, unkempt streets, or incomplete work would lead to personal accountability for the zonal heads.

In response to the directive, MCD has initiated the formation of specialised animal control squads that will operate on a 24-hour basis. Their objective is to manage and divert stray cattle, street dogs, and monkeys away from areas that will host summit events and along the designated routes for delegates. The clean-up efforts are to be intensified from September 1 to 13, targeting key venues and essential thoroughfares.

Areas earmarked for special attention include key landmarks such as Rajghat, Bharat Mandapam, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Lotus Temple, and Sunder Nursery, alongside significant retail areas such as South Extension. The MCD’s efforts will also focus on repairing damaged road surfaces, removing construction debris, and ensuring that public toilets near event locations are maintained in a hygienic and operational state.

Beautification Measures Being Implemented

As part of the beautification strategy, MCD workers have been instructed to transform neglected urban areas into green spaces. This includes installing decorative flower planters, restoring functioning streetlights, and implementing aesthetic lighting displays around notable landmarks. The goal is to create an appealing environment for both delegates and the general public.

Additionally, special measures are being taken for the BRICS Bazar event, which is set to occur at the National Crafts Museum from September 8 to 10. Enforcement teams will be tasked with constant supervision to eliminate illegal street vendors, dismantle unauthorised hoardings, and control illegal parking along major thoroughfares. Officials have also been instructed to maintain regular patrols in cleaned areas to deter the reoccurrence of encroachments.

Public health officials are also being mobilised to enhance mosquito control measures during this period, with increased fogging and spraying to mitigate the risk of vector-borne diseases. The Commissioner has mandated that the entire work process be documented through “before and after” photographs. He further warned that any delays or negligence could result in disciplinary action as the MCD strives to complete the clean-up and beautification efforts ahead of the summit.
