“If You Cry, I’ll Cry”: Delhi Judge Tells Daughter During Emotional Court Farewell Speech

The CSR Journal Magazine

Delhi High Court judge Justice Tara Vitasta Ganju bid an emotional farewell to the court on Monday as she prepared to assume her new role at the Karnataka High Court. In a touching moment, she turned toward her daughter, who was visibly emotional, and softly said, “If you cry, I will cry. Don’t cry.” The judge composed herself before continuing her speech, which reflected warmth, humility, and deep commitment to judicial integrity.

Tribute to Family

Expressing gratitude to her family, Justice Ganju said she owed much to her mother and daughter for their patience and understanding through the demanding life of a judge. “The life of a judge demands long hours of solitude,” she noted, adding that their support gave her the peace of mind to perform her duties with integrity. She emphasized that personal comfort or the prospect of criticism must never outweigh a judge’s obligation to the cause of justice.

Judiciary and the Power of Law

Justice Ganju underscored that the judiciary is not merely an arbiter of disputes but a guardian of the constitutional promises of liberty, equality, and justice. “It is our solemn duty to ensure that the law remains a shield for the weak and not a sword for the powerful,” she said, adding that public confidence in the judiciary must be preserved through integrity, independence, and transparency.

Guidance for Young Lawyers

Addressing young advocates, she urged them to practice discipline, humility, and patience, reminding them that the true worth of an advocate lies not in the number of cases argued but in the fairness and dignity with which they are conducted. She thanked members of the Bar for their cooperation, explaining that her firmness in court was always meant to uphold decorum and discipline.

Justice Ganju also acknowledged her staff and registry for their dedication, saying that working long hours and weekends had occasionally drawn criticism, but she never regarded diligence as a fault. “The demands of justice do not always keep to the clock,” she remarked.

Farewell Remarks from the Chief Justice

Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyaya praised Justice Ganju’s commitment to swift case disposal and said her tenure in Karnataka would be “wholesome and enriching.” He described her transfer as an opportunity to experience diverse litigation and legal cultures.

Justice Arun Monga, also transferred from Delhi to the Rajasthan High Court, delivered his own reflective farewell speech. He said a judge’s true voice is not in public speeches but in the reasoning, restraint, and reflection expressed in judgments.

An Ending That Promises Return

Concluding her address, Justice Ganju said that change is part of a judge’s life, but some farewells are harder than others. “This Court has taught me all that I know about law, fairness, and the profound responsibility that comes with judging others,” she said. She ended her address with optimism: “Every ending carries the promise of return. It is not a goodbye, only a pause.”
