Deepanshu Shokeen has been elected as the new vice-president of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) after running as an independent candidate in the 2026 elections. Background of Deepanshu Shokeen

Deepanshu Shokeen is a student at the Department of Buddhist Studies at the University of Delhi. He previously graduated from Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, where his involvement in student politics began to develop. Hailing from Peeragarhi village in Delhi, Shokeen comes from a modest background, with his father working as a bus conductor and his mother as an anganwadi worker.

Initially, Shokeen’s family encouraged him to prepare for the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination. However, he opted to engage in student politics, which he credits for shaping his leadership skills and increasing his visibility among peers. His activism has been closely associated with significant incidents impacting the student community, such as the Satya Niketan tragedy.

His rise in student politics was marked by a commitment to addressing student concerns, particularly around issues of safety and infrastructure on campus, which he prioritised throughout his campaign.

The Shift from NSUI to Independent Candidate

Initially, Shokeen sought a ticket from the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) to contest in the DUSU elections. He submitted his nomination but later received a request to withdraw it.
