The CSR Journal Magazine

A suspected mass suicide attempt by a debt-ridden family in Karnataka’s Bengaluru Rural district left two people dead and two others critically injured, police said on Sunday.

The incident took place in Mallenahalli village near Attibele, on the outskirts of Bengaluru. The deceased have been identified as 55-year-old Asha and her 34-year-old daughter Varshita, who died on the spot. Asha’s son, Mohan Gowda (32), and Varshita’s 11-year-old son sustained severe injuries and are currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital.

Incident Linked To Mounting Debt Pressure

According to preliminary police investigation, the family had been under severe financial stress due to mounting debt and alleged pressure from moneylenders.

Police said Mohan Gowda is suspected to have attacked his family members before attempting to take his own life. Investigators believe he slit the throats of his mother, sister and nephew before injuring himself in a similar manner.

In a significant development, Mohan had reportedly recorded a video on Saturday evening indicating the family’s intent to end their lives due to financial distress. The clip was sent to relatives shortly before the incident.

Relatives Alerted, Forced Entry Into House

Alarmed by the video message, relatives rushed to the family’s residence but found the house locked from the inside. With no response from within, they entered through a rear door.

Upon entering, they discovered the family members lying in a severely injured condition. Emergency services were alerted immediately, and the victims were rushed to hospital.

Despite medical intervention, Asha and Varshita were declared dead, while the other two remain in critical condition, officials said.

Probe Underway, Officials Visit Spot

Senior police officials, including the Bengaluru Rural Superintendent of Police, visited the scene and conducted a preliminary inspection.

Authorities said further investigation is underway to establish the exact sequence of events, including the role of alleged moneylenders and the circumstances leading up to the incident.

The case has highlighted concerns around financial distress and its impact on vulnerable families, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas.
