Cyclone Arnab Triggers Alert in Jharkhand; IMD Forecasts Heavy Rain for Three Days

The CSR Journal Magazine

The very severe cyclonic storm named ‘Arnab’ is anticipated to make landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast on Wednesday. This weather system is expected to bring about three days of heavy rainfall across Jharkhand, prompting state authorities to issue advisories regarding potential flooding and high winds. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has taken precautionary measures by issuing a ‘yellow’ alert for heavy rain in several districts.

Starting from 8:30 am on October 28, the alert covers Ranchi, Khunti, Simdega, Gumla, Lohardaga, Saraikela-Kharsawan, and both East and West Singhbhum. The IMD has indicated that the intensity of rainfall is likely to increase, leading to an ‘orange’ alert for seven districts: Garhwa, Palamu, Latehar, Lohardaga, Gumla, Simdega, and West Singhbhum, which will remain in effect until the morning of October 30.

IMD Issues Weather Warnings and Advisories

In a recent update on social media platform X, the IMD reported that the cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal has been moving west-northwest at a speed of 20 kmph over the past six hours. At 8:30 am, it was located approximately 220 km south-southeast of Vishakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. The department has warned residents to expect widespread thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds throughout the week.

Ranchi’s deputy commissioner, Manjunath Bhajantri, has directed officials to keep a close watch on low-lying areas that are particularly susceptible to urban flooding, waterlogging, and agricultural runoff. The administration has urged residents to remain vigilant and prepared for possible adverse weather conditions.

According to the advisory issued by the Ranchi district administration, waterlogging is anticipated on city roads and in low-lying sectors. The standing crops in agricultural areas may sustain damage, and temporary structures as well as buildings that are not structurally sound could be at risk from strong winds. Residents in flood-prone areas have been advised to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.

Precautionary Measures and Public Safety

As the situation develops, local authorities are emphasising the importance of public safety and preparedness. The district administration has recommended that individuals in vulnerable areas secure their properties and remain indoors during the peak of the storm. Emergency services are on standby to respond to any incidents that may arise due to the adverse weather conditions.

Officials are also coordinating with various departments to ensure that resources are available for immediate response and assistance. The IMD continues to monitor the storm’s trajectory and will provide updates as necessary to keep the public informed.

Community engagement is crucial during this time, and residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels. The IMD and local authorities are working together to mitigate the impact of Cyclone Arnab and ensure the safety of all citizens in Jharkhand.
