CPI(M)’s Md Salim Rejects Immediate TMC Alliance, Demands Accountability From Mamata Banerjee

The CSR Journal Magazine

The ongoing discussions regarding a potential alliance between the CPI(M) and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal are underscored by remarks from CPI(M) state secretary Md Salim. He has stated that before any electoral understanding can take place, the TMC and its leader Mamata Banerjee must confront their previous actions. Salim emphasised that the CPI(M) is intent on unifying various Left factions and collaborating with “like-minded political forces and individuals” within the state.

In an interview with INDIA TODAY, Salim highlighted that although the broader Opposition is striving for a unified front against the BJP at the national level, an electoral partnership on the ground in West Bengal is unlikely. He pointed out that the CPI(M) has previously resolved at the Kannur Party Congress in April 2022 that a collective challenge against the BJP should take shape, but alliances in West Bengal and Kerala remain impractical.

Challenges Facing Mamata Banerjee and TMC

Salim noted that Mamata Banerjee is currently facing repercussions from her past governance, indicating that the TMC’s image has suffered due to issues such as alleged corruption and political violence. He asserted that this has significantly impacted her credibility among voters. Though Banerjee has shown a willingness to engage with various Opposition parties, Salim suggested her efforts seem driven by a desire to maintain relevance in the political landscape.

Furthermore, he revealed that the CPI(M) has actively reached out to multiple Opposition groups, including the TMC, as part of efforts to create a shared resistance against the BJP, particularly regarding concerns surrounding the chief election commissioner’s credibility. However, Salim remained firm that the specifics of forging an alliance remain distant until Banerjee addresses her past failures.

Salim also reacted to claims made by the BJP regarding a potential partnership among CPI(M), TMC, and Congress for the forthcoming civic polls. He dismissed these assertions as a strategic narrative aimed at misleading the electorate and divesting attention from the TMC’s shortcomings.

Plans for Civic Elections and Wider Alliances

As the CPI(M) prepares for the local elections, Salim discussed the integration of all Left factions, coupled with finding support from politically aligned individuals. A significant emphasis is placed on creating a broader Left coalition that can effectively contest upcoming polls.

An important convention is set to take place on October 12, aimed at protesting the government’s decision to rename roads previously named after prominent figures like Karl Marx and Vladimir Lenin. This event, organised by the Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist), highlights the consolidation of Left forces amidst historical ideological differences in light of the current political climate.

Plans are also in motion to organise apolitical gatherings featuring notable public figures, including former bureaucrats and judges, who will discuss experiences relating to the electoral process, especially concerning voter list modifications. The aim is to foster a collective dialogue around these pressing issues.

Future Initiatives and Cultural Engagements

In responding to questions about cultural events like the Durga Puja book stalls, Salim reassured that the CPI(M) plans to increase its presence this year. He indicated that protective measures are in place to safeguard these stalls amid opposition from BJP-affiliated groups. With a diverse array of new titles anticipated, Salim conveyed that preparations are being made to enhance outreach efforts during the festival.

The efforts surrounding cultural engagement and electoral strategy reflect the CPI(M)’s intention to strengthen its foundation and respond proactively to the evolving political landscape in West Bengal. By addressing past concerns and promoting unity among Left factions, the party aims to bolster its position ahead of the forthcoming civic polls.
