Couple Arrested in Gujarat for Allegedly Drowning Newborn Daughter

The CSR Journal Magazine

A couple in the Panchmahal district of Gujarat has been arrested for allegedly killing their newborn daughter and discarding her body in a pond. The incident reportedly occurred shortly after the couple was discharged from a hospital, according to local police. The newborn, estimated to be around two days old, was discovered in a pond on October 7, which prompted authorities to initiate an investigation into the matter.

Police revealed that initially, a case against unidentified individuals was registered. However, within two days, they successfully identified the child’s parents as Suresh Rathwa and his wife, Sangeetaben Rathwa. During questioning, the couple allegedly confessed to the heinous act, citing their unwillingness to have another daughter as the primary motive for their actions.

Investigation Process Undertaken by Authorities

Following the discovery of the infant’s body, the police assembled five investigative teams to delve deeper into the case. They meticulously gathered birth records from maternity hospitals in the surrounding areas that had given birth in the prior week. This effort was aimed at tracing families with newborn children.

The inquiry revealed that several female infants had recently been born at a local hospital. Investigators reached out to the families to confirm details related to their newborns. This determined approach ultimately led them to the Rathwa couple, who had just welcomed a baby girl. The couple’s inconsistent responses during the interrogation raised suspicions among the investigators.

Upon further questioning, the couple allegedly disclosed the shocking details of their actions, which furthered the police’s case against them. As a result, both Suresh and Sangeetaben Rathwa were taken into custody, with murder charges being filed against them shortly thereafter.

Allegations and Current Status of the Case

The investigation has revealed that the couple reportedly did not want to have another daughter since they already had both a son and a daughter. According to police statements, after being discharged from the hospital, the Rathwas allegedly took their newborn daughter on a motorcycle, where they subsequently disposed of her body in the pond. They indicated that the baby was placed inside a plastic bag which was further weighed down by bricks, making the act more distressing.

Following the arrests, police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident. Authorities are gathering additional evidence as part of due process to ensure that justice is served. The case has shocked the local community, sparking discussions about gender preferences and the value of newborn girls in society.

As the investigation progresses, the authorities are committed to uncovering every detail related to the incident. They aim to ensure that such tragic occurrences do not happen in the future and that those responsible are held accountable for their actions.
