New Cyclone Forms Over Bay of Bengal, Landfall Near Andhra Pradesh

The CSR Journal Magazine

A new cyclone is forming over the Bay of Bengal, with satellite imagery revealing its gradual intensification as it moves towards India’s eastern coastline. This development comes shortly after the remnants of Cyclone Arnab affected central India, creating concerns about another severe weather event impacting coastal Andhra Pradesh.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that a deep depression in the southeast and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal is expected to strengthen into a cyclonic storm within the next six hours. Furthermore, the system is projected to evolve into a severe cyclonic storm by November 2, raising alarms for the coastal regions.

Recent thermal infrared satellite images from the INSAT-3DS, taken between 11:30 am and 11:57 am on November 1, depict a well-structured cloud formation over the Bay of Bengal. The spiral cloud pattern indicates a developing weather disturbance that is gaining strength over warm ocean waters.

Projected Path and Intensification

According to the IMD, the deep depression has been moving west-northwest at approximately 20 kmph in the hours leading up to the latest update. As of 8:30 am on November 1, the system was located over the southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal, about 630 km east-southeast of Chennai, 710 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam, and 710 km east-southeast of Nellore.

The IMD anticipates that the system will continue its west-northwest trajectory, intensifying into a cyclonic storm over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal. The expected transition into a severe cyclonic storm is projected for November 2, heightening concerns for the coastal areas.

As the cyclone approaches, the IMD has highlighted the potential for significant impacts along the Andhra Pradesh coastline. The system is likely to make landfall between Nellore and Narsapur by the morning of November 3, with sustained wind speeds forecasted to reach between 100-110 kmph, and gusts potentially hitting 120 kmph.

Impacts and Precautions Ahead of Landfall

The anticipated landfall poses serious risks, including damage to infrastructure, uprooting of trees, and disruptions to electricity and communication services. The IMD has urged residents in coastal areas to prepare for hazardous conditions as the cyclone approaches.

This impending cyclone arrives during a period of heightened weather activity in the Bay of Bengal, following Cyclone Arnab. As meteorologists closely monitor the storm’s intensity and trajectory, the next 48 hours are deemed critical for Andhra Pradesh.

Satellite observations will play a vital role in tracking the cyclone as it nears the coastline. The final intensity and exact landfall location will significantly influence the extent of the impact across coastal districts, underscoring the need for vigilance and preparedness among the local population.
