Congress Protests LPG Cylinder Shortage in Bhopal, Distributes Coal to Shopkeepers

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Madhya Pradesh Congress party organized a protest on March 17 in Bhopal, addressing what they described as a shortage of LPG cylinders. Party leaders expressed concern over the challenges faced by residents in obtaining these vital resources. During the demonstration, Congress members distributed coal to local shopkeepers, using handcarts to carry the coal packets as a symbolic gesture of support.

Coal Distribution as a Symbolic Gesture

Shopkeepers in the Govindpura area received five kilograms of coal each, aimed at helping them continue their businesses temporarily impacted by the unavailability of commercial LPG cylinders. Congress leader Ravindra Sahu Jhumarwala underscored that this was not an isolated incident, referencing past hardships faced by the public. He claimed that long queues for essential services have been a recurring issue during times of crisis, such as the demonetization period and the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly when people stood in line for Remdesivir injections.

Historical Context and Current Concerns

Jhumarwala expressed solidarity with the public, stating, “Today, people across the country are standing in queues for LPG cylinders. Ten years ago, we faced similar situations during demonetization, and we are experiencing it once again.” He assured the local community that assistance would be provided, including coal packets for those unable to access LPG cylinders. The leader criticized the government for purportedly providing incorrect information about LPG availability, emphasizing that long lines for gas cylinders continued to form.

Government’s Response and Ongoing Issues

The shortage of LPG cylinders has been exacerbated by global energy supply challenges, particularly due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia. However, a recent update from government officials indicated that there have been no reports of dry-outs at LPG distribution points across India. Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, confirmed that despite the concerns regarding LPG supply, the current availability at distributorships remains stable.
