Congress Member of Parliament Shafi Parambil recently raised doubts regarding India’s reported GDP growth of 7.8 per cent, highlighting a disconnect between economic indicators and the realities faced by ordinary citizens. He questioned why, despite this growth, many households struggle with persistent unemployment and inflation. Parambil’s comments were made in the context of the newly released GDP data, which he believes does not reflect the day-to-day experiences of many Indians.

In an interview, he stated that if growth rates are as impressive as the government claims, then the persistent high levels of unemployment and the lack of quality jobs require explanation. He emphasised the urgency of addressing urban unemployment, which continues to be a significant concern for many communities.

Parambil described the situation as paradoxical, indicating that a healthy economy should ideally create more employment opportunities. He called for a serious examination of why a substantial proportion of the population still faces job scarcity, even as the economy appears to be booming. His remarks underscore a sense of frustration among many regarding the disconnect between government statistics and lived experiences.

Rising Cost of Living Among Key Concerns

The rising cost of living was another focal point of Parambil’s critique. He expressed concern over the increasing inflation rates that have made it difficult for typical households to manage their expenses. According to him, the financial strain on families is evident, as they struggle to sustain their livelihoods amid soaring prices.

Parambil specifically pointed to the continuing high prices of essential items, including petrol and diesel, questioning the government’s ability to manage these costs effectively. He asserted that ordinary citizens should not have to bear the brunt of inflation, particularly when the national economy is reportedly growing. Prime Minister Modi’s Response to Economic Criticism

Parambil’s questions followed a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who celebrated the 7.8 per cent GDP growth for the first quarter of the fiscal year 2027. Modi noted that this statistic signifies the collective strength and resilience of the Indian populace, despite facing challenges from global economic conditions.

In his video address, Modi expressed optimism about maintaining the country’s growth trajectory, urging citizens to sustain their efforts. He also accused opposition parties of disseminating despair and misinformation, suggesting that such narratives threaten the positive momentum of the economy. Modi emphasized the importance of promoting domestic products and services through initiatives like ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Swadeshi, Vocal for Local’.

The Prime Minister’s remarks intend to highlight the government’s commitment to economic self-reliance and bolstering local industries, in contrast to the contrasting viewpoint presented by Parambil. As different voices emerge in the economic discourse, the government’s narrative focuses on growth, while opposition leaders draw attention to underlying societal issues.
