Congress, DMK Grapple with Infighting, Seat-Sharing Deadlock Ahead of Puducherry Polls

The CSR Journal Magazine

Recently, an off-the-record discussion with a senior Congress leader highlighted the ongoing turmoil within the party regarding the upcoming Assembly elections in Puducherry. With the nomination deadline approaching, the leader’s residence was filled with party workers from the Union Territory, indicating active preparations. Despite the Congress and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) forming an alliance, negotiations at the constituency level appeared to be unresolved. The situation has escalated to the point where “friendly contests” have emerged as a likely scenario in several constituencies. The seat-sharing arrangement between the parties was reportedly finalized only after the nomination process ended, resulting in both parties fielding candidates across multiple constituencies.

DMK’s Strategic Move

Sources have indicated that the lack of consensus on seat allocations by the deadline of March 25 allowed the DMK to capitalize on the situation. They proceeded to nominate candidates in six constituencies held by Congress and an additional seven that Congress had their eyes on. The Ozhukarai constituency was allocated to the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), an ally of the DMK. This tactic left Congress with limited options, prompting them to assign 22 candidates, which is six more than their initially agreed quota. This surge has resulted in numerous “friendly fights” that complicate the electoral landscape for both parties.

Internal Conflicts and Consequences

The Congress has publicly declared its intention to support only the officially designated 16 candidates and cautioned against disciplinary actions for those deviating. However, as these candidates are already listed on Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), managing repercussions has proven to be a complicated task. In response to the turmoil, leaders from the DMK and VCK have initiated discussions at the constituency level, aiming to convince Congress candidates who have strayed from their agreement to withdraw or at least reduce voter confusion. Currently, “friendly contests” are anticipated in five to six constituencies, including prominent areas like Nellithope and Ozhukarai.

Direct Competitions Emerge

The evolving situation has led to direct contests between the Congress and DMK in several constituencies such as Mangalam, Thirubuvanai, Raj Bhavan, Kalapet, and Karaikal South. This shift effectively transforms former alliance partners into rivals on the ground. In the previous Assembly elections, Congress finished second in Raj Bhavan and Kalapet, while DMK was the runner-up in Mangalam. The constituency of Thirubuvanai, previously secured by an Independent candidate, has now gained significance as a battleground for both parties, further exposing the tenuous nature of their partnership at the local level.
