Communal Tensions Erupt in Karnataka Following Stone-Pelting Incident, Eight Detained

The CSR Journal Magazine

Authorities in Karnataka have imposed prohibitory orders in Bagalkote until February 24, in response to a stone-throwing incident that occurred during a Shivaji Jayanti procession on Thursday night. Following the altercation, police have taken eight individuals into custody and have assured that the situation is currently stable with no significant injuries reported.

Incident Description

The altercation transpired as the procession was passing close to a local mosque. Witnesses from certain Hindu groups claim that stones were launched from the mosque area, alleging that individuals inside were responsible for the act. Meanwhile, law enforcement officials indicated that they are in the process of verifying these claims and analyzing video footage to identify the actual source of the stones.

Police Response and Injury Update

Superintendent of Police Siddharth Goyal, who was present during the incident along with senior police officials, reported that two stones were thrown and landed on the side of the police personnel. He clarified that no members of the public were harmed, stating, “The stones hit police personnel who were wearing helmets. I sustained only a minor scratch, nothing serious,” thereby countering rumors of considerable injuries.

Continuous Monitoring and Peaceful Conclusion of Procession

In the aftermath of the incident, extensive police arrangements were put in place to ensure public safety. According to Superintendent Goyal, the procession, which commenced around 3 PM, continued for approximately one and a half hours post-incident and concluded without further disruption. “People dispersed without any issue. There is no crowd gathering now and the situation is peaceful,” he affirmed.

Legal Actions and Investigations Underway

Law enforcement has formally registered a case in relation to the stone-pelting incident and is actively reviewing video footage to identify those involved. Superintendent Goyal stated, “If we find evidence, we will take the accused into custody. We are not attributing the act to any particular group at this stage. It appears to be the act of miscreants.” Following the incident, eight arrests have been confirmed.

Denial of Pre-Planned Allegations

The Superintendent also addressed claims made by leaders of some organizations suggesting that the incident was orchestrated in advance. He refuted these allegations, confirming that no stones or slippers hit any devotees, idols, or members of the public. “Only two small stones hit the police. There were no rods, weapons, roadblocks, or large-scale violence,” he added.

Security Measures Implemented

In light of the recent tensions, security measures have been enhanced, including drone surveillance and the deployment of senior police officers at the scene. Reports indicated that the stone-throwing occurred after the conclusion of namaz. Authorities are advising both the media and the public to validate information before disseminating unverified details.
