Commercial LPG Shortage Impacts Restaurants in Indore

The CSR Journal Magazine

The ongoing shortage of commercial LPG cylinders is creating significant challenges for restaurants and food vendors in Indore, mirroring a similar situation in the nearby capital city of Bhopal. As a result, many food stalls are struggling to maintain their operations, leading some establishments to temporarily close their doors. Restaurant owners report that the unavailability of commercial gas cylinders is forcing them to seek alternative cooking solutions.

Small Food Vendors Turn to Coal Amid Gas Crisis

Anil, who runs a tea and poha shop in the city, expressed his frustrations, stating that due to the cylinder shortage, he has had to resort to using coal for cooking. He mentioned, “We are unable to get commercial cylinders due to the shortage. Now, I bought coal on which we are currently operating. We will see for a day or two, or else we will shut it down. We cannot rely on coal for a long time.” His situation highlights the struggles faced by many small food vendors in the area.

Larger Restaurants Shift to Tandoors and Traditional Methods

In contrast, larger restaurant chains have adopted traditional cooking methods, such as the use of tandoors and furnaces, to prepare food in light of the ongoing supply issues. Ankur, who manages one of these establishments, explained, “We have been shifted to Tandoor for most of our food items and have stopped using the Tawa for the time being. We will use it till commercial cylinders are available again in the market. Our service is also affected due to it as preparation takes extra time than usual.” This shift indicates the adaptability required by businesses to cope with the current crisis.

Induction Cooking and Long Queues Reflect Wider Impact

Additionally, some restaurant operators are embracing technological alternatives, including induction cooking, as a response to the LPG cylinder shortage. The repercussions of this situation extend beyond the food industry, as residents have also been impacted, with reports of long queues forming outside several gas agencies for domestic LPG cylinders.

West Asia Conflict Disrupts LPG Supply Chain

The current disruption in the supply chain has been attributed to the broader geopolitical situation, particularly the conflict occurring in West Asia. In response, the central government has invoked the Essential Commodities Act, which prioritizes the distribution of resources for domestic consumption. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas indicated that production for domestic LPG has increased by approximately 25 percent, with all output being directed towards household consumers.

Government Sets Up Control Room to Monitor Crisis

To further mitigate the challenges posed by the LPG cylinder shortage, the Ministry of Home Affairs has established a control room that operates around the clock. This initiative aims to keep track of the situation and enhance the response to the ongoing supply disruptions. As restaurants and food vendors continue to navigate through these difficult circumstances, the impact of the commercial LPG shortage remains a significant concern in Indore and surrounding areas.
