Spotify Removes Data From Song Files During Streaming

The CSR Journal Magazine

Spotify’s streaming service impacts the data quality of songs listeners hear. While travelling on the Metro, an individual may enjoy music from their headphones, but much of the original sound data is missing. This is due to a process called lossy compression, where a significant portion of the sound information is intentionally removed to reduce file size. This technique allows for efficient streaming without taxing bandwidth, although it compromises the audio experience.

A standard CD carries approximately 1,411 kilobits per second of audio data, which translates to rich sound quality. In contrast, Spotify streams to free users at about 160 kilobits per second, equating to merely 11 per cent of the original CD quality. Even Premium users, who stream at up to 320 kilobits per second, only receive around 23 per cent of the audio information available on a CD. The distinction is notable, as between 77 and 89 per cent of the audio data is often lost in the process.

This compression allows Spotify to accommodate millions of listeners while maintaining a manageable data load. An hour of CD-quality music demands roughly 635 megabytes, whereas streaming at the highest bitrate on Spotify consumes about 144 megabytes. Such audio compression not only facilitates easier access but also creates a trade-off between file size and listening fidelity.

Understanding Audio Masking

The concept of audio masking plays a crucial role in this compression technique. Masking occurs when louder sounds prevent the listener from hearing quieter sounds. For instance, standing next to a loud drill makes it difficult to hear someone speaking softly. Research indicates that the human ear is more responsive to certain frequency ranges and less so to others, which influences how audio compression algorithms function.

Sound is categorised into approximately 24 frequency bands, a principle explored by researchers in the early 1960s. During the compression process, only the most significant components of the sound are preserved, while less important information is discarded. This selective deletion relies upon understanding which sounds a listener is likely to miss, allowing machines to retain only the essential parts of a track.

Temporal masking also affects the hearing process; after a loud noise, the ear remains temporarily less sensitive to quieter sounds that follow. The algorithms used in compression exploit both types of masking, discarding subtle details that would otherwise go unnoticed.

Implications for Music Genres and Quality

This audio compression raises specific concerns regarding different music genres, especially in complex forms like Indian classical music. The intricacies of gamakams, or note fluctuations, can be challenging for machines to interpret and might not translate well in a compressed format. Experts in music theory highlight the difficulty of ensuring that essential musical nuances are preserved in compressed audio files.

Despite the advancements in streaming options, many listeners may not notice the differences unless they are accustomed to high-quality audio equipment. Services like Spotify have introduced lossless streaming tiers, providing higher-quality options, but even these may face limitations based on the compatibility of listening devices.

As streaming services evolve, they face the ongoing task of balancing data efficiency with sound fidelity. While some advancements provide options for lossless formats, the reality of audio compression continues to influence the listener’s experience, demonstrating a collaboration between technological constraints and personal listening environments. The nuances of music are ultimately shaped by both the original recording and the limitations of audio delivery systems.
