CISF Seizes ₹2.27 Crore in Illicit Coal Across Bengal and Jharkhand Following MMDR Act Empowerment

Backed by newly acquired powers under the MMDR Act, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has intercepted nearly 4,000 metric tonnes of illegal coal worth ₹2.27 crore in a sweeping crackdown across Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) command areas.

Conducted between June 22 and September 8, the multi-state operation spanned vulnerable mining corridors in West Bengal and Jharkhand. Guided by DIG Shri K.P. Singh and overseen by Commandant Shri Rahul Singh Gautam, security personnel executed 778 targeted raids, filing an equal number of cases under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957.

* 67 Illegal Pits Shut Down: Unauthorized excavation sites were permanently sealed to choke off illicit supply chains at the source.

* Massive Recovery: A total of 3,966.990 metric tonnes of stolen coal, valued at ₹2,27,66,179, was confiscated.

* Logistics Crippled: Smugglers lost critical transport assets, including 2 trucks, 8 tractors, 3 pickups, 5 Totos, 97 motorcycles, and 218 bicycles.

* Suspects Apprehended: Four individuals were taken into custody during the raids for active involvement in coal pilferage.

Empowered to file direct complaints before competent legal authorities, the force has intensified intelligence-led patrols across the region. Officials confirmed that round-the-clock surveillance will persist to protect national mineral wealth and dismantle local theft networks operating within ECL territories.
