Centre approves Rs 97 crore to upgrade Sairang railway station into world-class facility

The Central government has approved Rs 97 crore for the redevelopment of Sairang railway station into a world-class facility, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma informed the state Assembly.

Located around 21 km from Aizawl, Sairang is the terminal station of the 51.38-km Bhairabi–Sairang railway line, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September last year, linking Mizoram’s capital to the national railway network.

Lalduhoma said the Ministry of Railways has formally accepted the state government’s proposal to grant the station “World Class” status, enabling large-scale modernisation. The sanctioned funds will be used to upgrade infrastructure in line with international standards following Mizoram’s integration into India’s railway grid.

Infrastructure expansion and logistics hub planned

The Chief Minister said the redevelopment plan includes major structural upgrades, such as vertical and horizontal expansion of the existing station building and construction of additional terminal facilities to accommodate increasing passenger traffic. The project will also focus on beautification of the station complex and surrounding areas to enhance the overall travel experience.

He added that the tendering process has already begun and bids have been opened, indicating that work is likely to commence soon.

Apart from improving passenger amenities, the state government is also exploring plans to develop Sairang into a key logistics centre. Lalduhoma said discussions are underway with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to establish a large warehouse near the station.

He noted that land availability had initially been a challenge, but a joint inspection has now been scheduled. If suitable land is identified, a major warehousing hub will be developed to boost regional trade and support local businesses.

The announcement comes shortly after the launch of the Sairang–Silchar rail service earlier this month, marking Mizoram’s full integration into India’s railway network.
