Calgary Residents Swati Narula and Kunwardeep Singh Released Following Major Fentanyl Bust

The CSR Journal Magazine

Authorities apprehended two residents of Calgary after nearly eight kilograms of fentanyl were discovered hidden in their vehicle during a routine traffic stop on a highway in Saskatchewan. This incident took place on January 28, 2025, when officers from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) conducted a patrol along Highway 1, which is part of the Trans-Canada Highway. Upon searching the vehicle, law enforcement officials found the substantial quantity of fentanyl concealed beneath the spare tire. The occupants of the vehicle, who were part of a drug trafficking investigation, were subsequently detained.

Identification and Charges Filed

The suspects have been identified as Swati Narula, 27, and Kunwardeep Singh, 29, both of whom reside in Calgary, Alberta. Upon being apprehended, they informed investigators that they were en route to Regina at the time of the stop. Both Narula and Singh were charged with trafficking a controlled substance as well as possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking. They made their first court appearance in Swift Current Provincial Court the day after their arrest, on January 29, 2025.

Bail and Release Conditions

Kunwardeep Singh was granted bail on February 20, 2025, after posting a bond of $25,000. Swati Narula followed suit with her release on March 4, 2025, on a cash bond of $10,000. Her release came with specific conditions, including the surrender of her passport, adherence to a nightly curfew, and a restriction to remain within 100 kilometers of her sister’s residence in Calgary. Subsequently, Singh’s bail conditions were relaxed, allowing him to return to work as a truck driver in Calgary.

Charges Stayed by Authorities

On February 24 and February 27, 2025, all charges against Narula and Singh were stayed, respectively. In the Canadian legal system, staying charges permits the Crown to reinitiate prosecution within one year if deemed necessary. If not acted upon within that timeframe, the case concludes. The decision to stay the charges indicates the Crown’s assessment that a conviction is unlikely or that pursuing the case lacks public interest.

Significance of the Drug Seizure

The RCMP characterized the seizure as significant owing to fentanyl’s extreme potency, a synthetic opioid that has been linked to numerous overdose fatalities across Canada. Superintendent Grant St. Germaine noted that even a minuscule amount of fentanyl could result in a fatal overdose, emphasizing that this operation potentially prevented millions of doses of the substance from reaching local communities. The ongoing efforts by law enforcement aim to combat the widespread issues associated with opioid misuse and distribution in Canada.
