CSR: Encouraging Blood Donation To Save Lives

Blood Donation

India is currently facing blood shortage. It has about 10% less blood corresponding to its requirements. This accounts to 12 lakh blood units. The eligible blood donor population is more than 512 million people in India. However, because of ignorance, lack of knowledge about the simple process, and myths associated with it, India has not really been able to cover the deficit.

India faces almost 1200 road mishaps every day. About 60 million trauma induced surgeries are conducted in the country every year. Apart from this, millions of complicated pregnancies, major operations, cancer treatments, thalassemia treatments, etc. require huge amount of blood transfusions.

Earlier, the blood donors were reimbursed for their donation. This activity has been banned by the government since 1995. This is cause further shortage in blood donors. However, this has also stopped unsafe blood donations made in the greed of money.

Several organisations are working towards sensitizing the public of the benefits of blood donations. This has increased the voluntary donations from 54.3% in 2006 to 83% in 2012. The shortage has gone down from 17% to 9%. However, people still die because of lack of blood.

On the occasion of its 124th year milestone, Punjab National Bank organised blood donation camps across 200 blood donation centres in 76 circle offices covering over 6500 branches across all states and union territories.

The camp was inaugurated at PNB Head Office in Dwarka in association with the Red Cross Society of India and AIPNBOA (All India Punjab National Bank Officers Association). The blood donation drive resulted in over 15,000 units of blood being donated. A large number of local staff members voluntarily came forward to participate in this initiative.

Blood donation is a simple and harmless process. An average body has 10 pints of blood in it. Roughly one pint is taken out during blood donation. It only takes 6 to 8 weeks for the body to replace that blood.

Also, There are four types of transfusable products that can be derived from blood: red cells, platelets, plasma and cryoprecipitate. Two or three of these are produced from a pint of donated whole blood. Thus, we can save more than one life by donating blood just once.

CSR: Giving Every Dream a Chance

Giving Every Dream a Chance

Every child has a dream and each dream is valid. This is because their dreams, thoughts, and aspirations make children what they are. An event showcasing the beneficiaries of Akshaya Patra’s “Giving Every Dream a Chance”—a special initiative to nurture children with unique dreams was held at Taj Yeshwantpur, Bangalore. It is a humble attempt to identify children with special dreams and give them the opportunity to realise these dreams.

Starting with three children, ‘Giving Every Dream a Chance’ as an initiative has scaled up to mentor more than 300 children from 15 Government Schools in Bengaluru, Hubballi, Hyderabad, and Vrindavan. Taking due note of their passion, these children were supported with mentorship programs, wherein they were coached, groomed, and guided by the experts of their respective fields. CSR: Promoting Hockey

Women's hockey India

Cricket is the only sport that gets serious light in the country. Indian cricketers make somewhere around 2 crore rupees per annum. This is in the games. With the limelight they receive, they easily make way more than that in endorsements. However, the hockey players in India make somewhere around 15 lakh rupees per annum.

This has discouraged many people to take up sports other than cricket as their profession. The hockey players in the country do not lack talent or courage, but they do not always have the required equipment to practice.

Manisha Dhawal (age 20), Senior girls’ team captain of women’s hockey team of Gurgaon, who has also played at national level said, “We used to practice without proper equipment and we had to borrow hockey sticks from other team members.”

DLF foundation is working towards curbing the situation.  In an endeavor to promote sports among women and motivate women athletes, the organisation has distributed hockey kits to Gurgaon women’s hockey teams. A total of 54 kits are distributed among Junior, Sub-Junior and Senior Women’s teams at Government boys senior secondary school, Gurgaon village. The state-of-the- art hockey kit is aligned to international standards.

Payal (18), Junior girls’ team captain, who has also played nationals said, “We are feeling very much delighted and respected by this gesture of the Foundation. This initiative of encouraging and promoting women in sports is highly commendable. They have provided us with proper kits which consist of hockey sticks, shoes, shin guards, track suits etc. Now we can practice without getting injured. I can practice better with better equipment.”

Gurgaon Village has produced the maximum number of hockey players from Haryana. Majority of the women’s hockey team of Gurgaon also has players belonging to Gurgaon village.

Dr. Vinay Sahni, CEO, DLF Foundation said: “Women’s hockey team is a pride of the city and a torchbearer to budding players. This initiative is a part of our efforts to motivate athletes and encourage more women to embrace sports as their profession.”

Haryana has been at the forefront in encouraging sports. Many players have brought laurels to the state. Haryana was crowned champion in 8th Hockey India Sub Junior (Women) National Championship 2018 (A Division) held recently. Hockey is the national game of the country and a recent stellar performance in Commonwealth Games at Gold Coast has lifted hopes.

CSR: Short-termism impedes progress of millions

Sustainable investing

The prospects of around 800 million of the world’s poorest people remain dire. The global economy is experiencing a moderate upturn, and momentum around sustainable investing is growing, the UN has said.

But the vast majority of investment is still short-term oriented and commitments by the international community to create sustainable economies are not being met.

There is an increasing interest in socially responsible investing, but that is no substitute for a broader transformation in the financial system. The report states that the current system rewards investors, financiers and project managers that prioritize short-term profits. Similarly, policy makers are excessively focused on short-term considerations. But there is a price to pay. Infrastructure projects are shelved in favour of short term priorities. Small businesses and women remain excluded from the financial system.

“The good economic news in some regions masks the very real risk that the poorest will be left behind,” said LIU Zhenmin, Under-Secretary-General for the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs. “There is no room for complacency.”

“If we don’t invest in infrastructure projects like bridges, roads and sewage systems, if the poorest and women are cut off from access to credit and other financial services, we have little prospect of achieving our global goals”, he added.

Per capita growth remains negative or insignificant in many countries where the poverty rate is already high, entrenching inequality.

Overcoming the short-term outlook of many investors is a complex but urgent issue.  according to “Financing for Development: Progress and Prospects,” the 2018 comprehensive annual progress report on how to finance the Sustainable Development Goals.

Pension funds, insurance companies and other institutional investors hold around $80 trillion in assets. But the majority of their resources are invested in liquid assets, such as listed equities and bonds in developed countries.  Investment in infrastructure still represents less than 3 per cent of pension fund assets, with investment in sustainable infrastructure in developing countries even lower.

The lack of long-term investment horizons also means that major risks, such as those from climate change, are not incorporated into decision-making.

According to the report, the solution lies in a multifaceted approach. It includes changing payment practices: the compensation of financial advisors and portfolio managers is too often linked to short term results. More transparency also helps: some countries now require all listed companies to disclose financial risks they face from climate change.

Short-sighted policies also result in a lack of access to finance for countries in urgent need. Support for countries affected by disasters is often too little, too late. Innovative financial instruments exist that provide quicker access to funding. Countries can set up insurance-like mechanisms, and the international community can support those that can’t afford premiums. Loans can be set up to reduce repayments automatically during crises. But so far, major funders have not taken up these promising tools.

“We have to reach beyond the quick fix if we are going to create a world that can sustain all of us,” said Navid Hanif, Director of Financing for Sustainable Development Office. “Political leadership and public policies are indispensable.”

It takes leadership to overcome short-term political cycles, devise and enforce rules which have widespread benefits but may face resistance by powerful groups, for example tax reforms and stopping illicit financial flows, the report notes.

The report emphasizes that in donor countries, political leaders must do more to meet their commitment to provide financial assistance to the world’s most vulnerable countries.

Beyond financing, the report highlights several cross-cutting areas that impact sustainable financing and that require policy makers attention. For example:

  • New technologies present boundless opportunities. However, in analyzing the potential of new technologies, the report warns that the transformative power of technology raises complex ethical, socio-economic and human rights challenges and risks. In the short-term, technological change could lead to job losses and increased polarization in labour markets. The report argues for adopting a long-term perspective, and calls on governments to make complementary investments, strengthen social protection and urgently develop regulatory frameworks so that benefits of technological change are shared broadly, and risks to privacy and data protection, financial stability and integrity are addressed.
  • Gender inequalities persist in access to finance, technology, public services, decent jobs, unpaid care and domestic work, participation in policy-making processes and many other areas. Bank account ownership among women is about 58 per cent, and for men, 65 per cent.  In Asia, only 16 per cent of businesses are women owned. Such inequality threatens achievement of the 2030 Agenda, but also weakens inclusive growth prospects by denying women opportunities to fully participate in the economy.

In the foreword to the report, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said, “The world has the resources to deliver, but they are not allocated where they are needed most. The choices we make now on financing will be pivotal.”

Why Attach Casteism Or Religion To An Unacceptable Criminal Offence?

Development, growth, education, women empowerment – these are the words that our politicians use when they fight elections. And these are the keywords in their propaganda that make us trust them. India is known to be the fastest growing country. But what is it actually growing in? Crime? Rapes? Murders? What exactly?

A girl gets raped by an MLA. The police do not agree to register an FIR. They do not allow her to record the name of the MLA in her statement. The girl has to take a step as extreme as self immolation to get noticed by the CM. The father of the girl who accompanies her to the court to seek justice gets framed in a fake case and gets arrested under section 25. He gets tortured and abused in lock up by the police, and succumbs to his injuries later on.

We roam around freely in the city, while trusting our police. We are content knowing, they are there to protect us if anything goes wrong. But how do we live if we get to know that our police are actually sold out to the politicians and they are actually the ones who are killing the innocent, instead of helping them. How do we trust our government if its own employees are criminals and it doesn’t take any action against them?

Our Prime Minister talks a lot about women’s rights. He has been very vocal about what kind of punishments should a rape accused be given. He believes in connecting with his subjects through weekly podcasts. Why is he silent today?

It is rightly said that Justice delayed is justice denied. How do we stand up with pride in front of the world when our country has a system so corrupt? How do we invite our friends from abroad to visit us without having a conviction of their safety? And why is it that no action gets taken unless the people are monitoring the government action? We need a government that doesn’t work because someone is looking, but because, it is its job.

The gang rape of an 8-year old has sparked rage and fury, reminding one of the Nirbhaya case in 2012. In India rape is an official crime but it is common and seen as a right of an individual to oppress. This is done on a variety of grounds, such as the armed forces getting away due to special protection, communal grounds or just blaming the very attire of a woman.

For every 15 minutes a rape case is reported in India. It is legal according to Manusmriti law to rape shudra women and considered as a dharma, as they were called as devadasis. In modern India, these vedic laws and manu laws do not exist, but the fascist upper class still has the same mindset. When killing, violence and raping are a part of one’s faith, how can you imagine a crime-free society?

A retired government official and four policemen have been charged over the gang rape and murder of an eight-year-old Muslim girl in Indian-administered Kashmir. The retired official, Sanji Ram, ordered his nephew and a policeman to kidnap the girl, Asifa, in January to terrorise members of her nomadic Bakerwal community into leaving Kathua district in the region’s mainly Hindu Jammu division, according to a court filing.

The girl was heavily sedated, kept in a Hindu temple, and gang-raped by at least three men over the course of four days in mid-January, the police said in the charge sheet made public on Tuesday. She was later strangled and her body was found in the forest near the temple.

One of the three suspected rapists was a policeman. Another officer, Anand Dutta, who was initially in charge of the investigation, took more than 1.5 lakhs in bribes to cover up the crime, according to the police. Dutta even washed the clothes Asifa was wearing at the time of her death to remove any blood or semen stains, they said. He is amongst a total of eight suspects who have been detained over Asifa’s rape and murder. All eight are Hindu.

Protests have now spread across much of Kathua. After the brutal gang rape and murder of a medical student in New Delhi in 2012, the government promised to introduce legal reforms and support services to help victims of sexual violence. The question is, where the Prime Minister and the party, which gave hope that days of crimes committed against women with complete impunity were over, by selling the slogan of “Beti Padhao, Beti Bachao”.

Only because the community was trying to be taught a lesson, did “India’s beti” and her family, have to take such a painful hit? It is absolutely imperative for leaders to come forth, speak and take strict action. Is the crime not worthy enough for a comment from the highest office, which has been silent since assuming office in 2014. Is any place safe in the country when rape is based on your religion?

All the citizens of the country have to stand together in one voice and not let our bodies pay a price due to politics, personal gains or cultural differences.

US Firms’ Refuse To Join Trump In A Race To The Bottom

A bird’s eye view of 2017 paints an interesting picture, despite the initial darkness of the year’s low points. Without doubt, there were global shocks from Trump, overall climate change, and multiple cases of Human Rights violations. However, it has also been a year where the control of sustainable practices has shifted from the hands of the larger agencies like governments and policy makers to the hands of smaller units. This year saw organisations taking a stand, saw individuals making noise about unfair practices, and a global shift towards building responsibly for the future. Business planning has grown to include considerations of human resources, environmental impact, and long-term company footprint. Of all that has happened in the sector, we look at some of the most far-reaching in this article; events that have already begun making waves.

Corporate Drive for Better Disclosure

Early in the year, we saw BlackRock Inc, an entity with massive clout; the world’s largest asset manager, put pressure on companies to explain their approach to including climate change, and sustainability practices into their business plans. Within a very short span of time, it was the business owners and established corporates that spoke up in favour of building for sustainability. A notable example is that of McDonald’s, which has been working towards finding more sustainable practices to produce their beef. However, they recently launched a new push towards understanding how they can also create impact to soil quality, and create overall impact to productivity while maintaining soil health. Closer to home, the focus on environment has definitely sharpened, with the Delhi smog situation, and more, and the collective global move towards change has sped up in the latter part of 2017.

Explosive growth in EV

One of the major development in the push for sustainability was the explosion of electric vehicles, influenced by the fore-runner in the effort; Tesla. With the launch of their electric semi truck in the latter part of the year, Tesla took the push for sustainable practices to a new high. Once the model was launched, it didn’t take corporates long to sign up. Besides PepsiCo and UPS, Global logistics player, DHL Supply Chain has placed an order for ten Tesla Electric Class 8 Semi Trucks, which they aim to test by 2019. The longer-term impact of this will not only be environmental, but also quality of life of their drivers and talent retention in a tight labour market. The electric vehicle market has received a huge impetus from the widespread acceptance and adoption of the push for more corporate responsibility driven business practices.

In India companies such as NTPC Ltd, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (Bhel) and Power Grid Corp. of India Ltd, are all working towards building for EVs, to remain relevant in the evolving energy landscape of the country and the world. The Ministry of Heavy Industries has also given its approval to the introduction of EV-based public transportation systems in 11 cities across the country, and players such as Tata Motors, Maruti Suzuki, Honda, etc are all working towards the effort.

China’s leadership in green finance

A week after the US withdrawal from the Paris Accord, Beijing hosted a high-level international forum for energy ministers. The Chinese officials not only declared that their targets basis the Paris Agreement would be met within time, they also took a global leadership position in support of clean energy. From the largest user of energy resources, and the largest polluter, China repositioned themselves as a proponent of environmentally sound practices. China also created financial incentives and a financially-driven effort towards sustainability, by financing the treatment of agricultural waste, banks being encouraged to explore new financing mechanisms, including emissions trading and water use permits, and options of credit and special funds for environmentally friendly industries. Additionally, with a focus on green bonds, China’s green bond issuance exceeds that of any other country or supranational organisation. The efforts undertaken by China set an example of a new path to industry development; not only for developing nations like India, but also for nations wherein the shift to sustainability is underway. China has created a realisation that it’s not about massive overhauls, but the smaller tweaks in the systems that make all the difference. Additionally, their diversification of effort also opens the doors for more innovative thinking when fitting sustainability into their business plans; a model which can be adapted to multiple economies across the world.

Micro grids enabling renewable energy

With the focus on reducing fossil fuel usage, and the explosion of EVs, obviously, the next focus will be electricity. As more energy use gets hooked to the grid, the grid needs to be greener, more resilient, and reliable so we can depend on it at all times including during the increasing natural disasters. Enter the microgrid, which can be built to rely on greener fuel sources, and jump in to augment the bigger electrical grids. With smart use of technology like IoT, Machine Learning, and Big Data, these grids can be built for a much stronger contribution to the overall energy requirements.

Global power and automation player ABB is looking at India as a potential location for its microgrid solutions. Akin to their solutions implemented on Robben Island in the Cape of Good Hope, they aim to try a similar approach with Indian island locations like Lakshwadweep, Elephanta, and Andaman & Nicobar. These will be built to withstand the weather conditions which tend to be erratic in these areas, resulting in a robust microgrid being developed with a significant impact on programs such as the Sagarmala port development project, etc.

US firms refusing to join Trump’s race to bottom

With the most powerful and influential country in the world denouncing the Paris Climate Accord, one would think this set the stage for a huge setback in the push for sustainability. However, after the declaration, with a public announcement, large companies like Apple, Microsoft, Facebook, Gap Inc., and many others not only demanded that Trump reconsider his choice, but also declared their support for the Paris Climate Treaty.

CSR: Gardening For Mental And Physical Health

Home Gardening India

Gardening is the new cool hobby that everyone should adapt. Plant cultivation is a necessity for existence of life. However, with rapid urbanization, the green cover of every city is reducing in size.

India is second largest populated country in the world. And the population keeps growing unchecked. With growing population, the demand for resources also grows. However, their availability is limited. The food system in India is suffering because of the increasing population.

Industrialization is farming has made it expensive for small scale farmers. In order to meet the demands, the farmers are forced to adapt these new equipments that are not really tried and tested. This forces them to go under debts. It also ruins the quality of the soil in a longer run. Farmers even end up using chemical fertilizers and pesticides in high amounts to increase the production of their produce and earn more money to get rid of their debts. In the end, it is not just them, but everyone that suffers. Because the food produced in this manner is not really healthy.

Home gardening is a concept that could solve many problems. It can ensure us of the quality of food we eat, because we exactly know where it came from. Also, since we are used to the soil of the place we live, it is healthier to eat the food grown in that soil rather than that of somewhere else.

Gardening is also considered as a healthy exercise everyone should practice. Daily gardening chores like watering, weeding, trellising, mulching, and harvesting are great ways to augment an exercise regimen. Although, most of the time gardening is not a substitute for focused cardio and strength training, but it combines low-impact exercise with other benefits. Studies have also shown that staying in a natural environment, reduce stress, lower blood pressure and improve concentration.

Gardening is often considered to be therapeutic by many. The activity of gardening is compared with meditation or praying because of its peaceful nature. Gardening is also a doable contribution everyone can make to protect the environment. However, if that is not a good enough motivator to garden, we recommend you to try it out once, for your personal peace of mind and health.

Thank you for reading the story until the very end. We appreciate the time you have given us. In addition, your thoughts and inputs will genuinely make a difference to us. Please do drop in a line and help us do better.
