BJP Seeks Third Consecutive Term in Jagiroad Assembly Constituency

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Jagiroad Assembly constituency in Assam will participate in the Legislative Assembly elections on April 9, 2026. Voters across 126 constituencies in Assam will cast their ballots in a single phase, with the counting of votes scheduled for May 4, 2026. This electoral cycle is marked by a competitive landscape, particularly in Jagiroad.

Political Landscape and Contenders

The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which includes the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), is aiming for a third consecutive term in Assam. In opposition, the Congress-led alliance includes the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), Raijor Dal, and Communist Party of India (Marxist) among others. Together, they are looking to leverage anti-incumbency sentiments to regain power in the state.

For the Jagiroad constituency, the BJP has nominated the incumbent Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) Pijush Hazarika, who will face off against Bubul Das from the Congress. The BJP has experienced success in this constituency, winning under Pijush Hazarika’s leadership in the previous terms.

Jagiroad is classified as a Scheduled Caste (SC) reserved seat and is part of the Nowgong parliamentary constituency, situated in Morigaon district. The local economy is predominantly agrarian, with a significant portion of the electorate comprising indigenous Assamese, tribal communities, and voters from the Nepali Gorkha population, along with a segment of Muslim voters.

Challenges Facing Jagiroad Constituency

The constituency grapples with various persistent challenges that affect residents. Key issues include irrigation difficulties and high rates of unemployment. However, the development of a semiconductor plant in the area is expected to create considerable job opportunities in the near future. Flooding remains a recurrent problem for many residents, alongside inadequate access to drinking water.

In the 2021 Assembly elections, Pijush Hazarika secured his seat with a total of 1,06,643 votes, representing 54 per cent of the votes cast. His closest rival, Swapan Kumar Mandal from Congress, garnered 77,239 votes, while Bubul Das from AJP received 12,815 votes. The margin of victory was notable at 29,404 votes.

The electorate in Jagiroad during the 2021 elections numbered 2,23,191, with a voter turnout of 89.3 per cent. A total of 1,97,600 votes were recorded for this election cycle, reflecting considerable public engagement.

In the previous 2016 elections, Hazarika won with 94,550 votes, accounting for 55.4 per cent of the total, while the incumbent Congress candidate, Bibekananda Dalai, received 66,224 votes and Putul Das from AIUDF achieved 7,192 votes. The margin of victory in this instance was 28,326 votes, and the electoral engagement was marked by a turnout of 85.4 per cent from an electorate of 2,01,287.

Expectation for Upcoming Elections

As the polling day nears, the focus shifts to whether Jagiroad voters will continue to support the BJP-led NDA or will choose to opt for a shift in governance under the opposition alliance. This decision could significantly influence the overall dynamics of Assam’s upcoming 2026 Assembly elections, making Jagiroad a focal point of interest for political observers and voters alike.
